Many of us live in cultures that seem to be increasingly specialized in hurried and frantic living. The voices of secularism and materialism are joined by countless other voices that compete for our time and energy. Sometimes these competing voices are seeking to recruit us for genuinely good things, while other times this is not so. In the midst of such a noisy chorus, it is often easy for us to spend the bulk of our energy reacting to life around us, rather than cultivating a peaceful center wherein we give attention to our personal relationship with God, and make possible the re-creation of our own spirits.
