English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
In some houses the thrumming of lugubrious guitars added to the depression of the triste night. Giant tree-frogs rattled in the foliage as loudly as ---------------------the end man's "bones" in a minstrel troupe.--------------------- By nine o'clock the streets were almost deserted.

Hi Carol. I think "bones" are more common in the US. I'm currently taking an advanced search workshop through Google - lots of fun!
agree Charles Davis : Sure. Maybe a word on minstrels and endmen would also help.

On minstrels as an American entertainment, the Wikipedia article is very useful.

The end men or endmen were the musicians at either end of the row. These illustrations from the Wikipedia article show them. Look at the three endmen (with blacked-up faces) on the left in this picture; they are holding bones:

Thanks, gallagy, and many thanks for the Irish bones page, which I loved. I've never tried bones, though I have played the spoons (badly). Very tricky to do well.
