If this is the kind of franking machine that also seals your envelope or parcel for you \"bad roll start\" can mean that the roll of tape (gummed or pressure sensitive) that is used to seal the packages is not aligned well. It\'s in the wrong position, isn\'t rolling well and needs to be repositioned / readjusted in order to function properly. HTH.
