French term

effort antagoniste

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial railways
Still on my rail brake calculations:

Does anyone have any ideas for "effort antagoniste" - I assume it's some kind of counterforce, but I should appreciate confirmation (or contradiction!) as applicable.

Many thanks

reaction force

Normally, a reaction or a reaction force is a major parameter in mechanical analysis (calculation). The other suggestions expreess the same, but engineers use "reaction."

counterforce

an "effort antagoniste" is any "effort" (strength) that goes against (in the opposite direction) some force.
Some people may even use it to indicate BOTH the "force(s) AND counterforce(s)"... Be careful.

It can also be used in non-physical ways, for instance: if someone or some organizatio tries to oppose something or someone else, it can be said to be an \"effort antagoniste\".
