broad, upright growth
"Climbing roses are of two types - those with broad upright growth known as pillars and the vigorous spreading varieties called climbers. Pillars naturally have a columnar shape and are valuable for small areas and are especially suited for arbors and trellises. The spreading climbers, on the other hand, develop long arching canes. Flowers are produced in profusion when these canes are trained horizontally along a fence, but will flower only on the terminal bud if allowed to grow upright.
