German term

Gewölbewirkung

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering or also geological term
hello members
can anyone offer a convincing translation for this?
I've no idea at all what it should be. austrian text. context:
Durch diese Innenschale wird die Gewölbewirkung bzw. die Tragfähigkeit der Konstruktion wieder hergestellt

will happily pass on points to anyone who's in the know!

arch action

another suggestion, as per Langenscheidt Bauwesen.

e.g.
The vault is a structural system that distributes loads by arch action through a single curved plane to continuous supports. The stresses within the vault are primarily compressive....

disagree Alan Johnson : I'd disagree, this is not about the appearance of a ceiling.

agree Maureen Millington-Brodie : still works with the inside of the roof structure

disagree asptech : The word describes a mechanical action = vertical loads resisted by inclined reaction forces. It's not about architecture.

vault-effect, also: arch-effect

"An underground reference network will be set up on the most stable part of the tunnel, its slab. The slab of the tunnel will be filled with concrete and will take the full benefit of the vault effect for a maximum stability."

A curved metal roof is featured at the main entrance. It was shaped for a half-vault effect. The long-term maintenance costs and aesthetics were critical in the selection of metal for this area.

Analysis of complex structures requires their complete three-dimensional modelling. An example of this is the capturing of the failure mode mechanisms in dams where the arch-effect (or vault-effect) plays a major role in the structural response. Furthermore, in this type of structures is not possible to establish "a priori" the failure surfaces determining the structural collapse.

Thank you, Alan!
agree DC Josephs : Alan's right, it's about the load-bearing nature of the structure, not the appearance

Definitely the structure. Thank you, DC Josephs!

effect of the vaulting

Doesn't mean the same as any of those already posted; I THINK this is what is meant, however.
