Each hedge must have a relationship to a hedged item/underlying transaction.
Example: You are in the eurozone and have a contract to deliver X over the next year in exchange for US dollars. You buy a USD/EUR currency forward to hedge against changes in the exchange rate. The contract is the hedged item and the forward is the hedge, which is related to the contract.

Note from asker:
Thanks Ted! I understand now about hedging relationship, but if grundgeschäft is the hedged item, than what is sicherungsgeschäft? The full sentence reads "Jedes Sicherungsgeschäft hat sich auf ein Grundgeschäft zu beziehen." |

General Business Expenditure
It sounds familiar and I think I recall it being translated along those lines.
Note from asker:
Thanks for the suggestion Chris. It sounds good, but the problem is that I also have "Marktbezug" later in the document, and the first sentence under grundgeschäftsbezug talks about a hedge being based on a "grundgeschäft" |
