Überfallinterview

German to English Other Journalism TV journalism
From a documentary script.
"Totale: Ueberfallinterview mit Dr. XY"
"O-Ton Ueberfallinterview mit Dr. XY"
I know exactly what is meant: someone (usually someone important) is accosted by a journalist and asked for their comments. But does anyone have a good rendering in English?

Depending on the context, you could also say foot-in-the-door interview.

ambush interview

In some circles, it is common for media trainers to use ambush interviews at the start of their training. One or more participants are singled out and asked (but more often forced or coerced) into participating in an interview at the start of the training — without any preparation or guidance. Theoretically, this demonstrates the value of being prepared, although it seems to underscore a message that there may be a reporter lurking around any corner or under any rock.
Realistically, ambush interviews are extremely rare in a non-training environment. Most organizations, when they have serious issues brewing, are aware that such issues could erupt at any time. How many of us have attended meetings in which someone in the management group says, “I really hope reporters don’t get a hold of this”? If such a comment is ever made at a meeting, the organization should never be ambushed. It needs no other warning because it has, quite frankly, warned itself.

ABC’s Slimy Ambush Interview Of Levi Johnston
Now that Levi Johnston has presumably seen the slimy interview that ABC’s Neil Karlinsky sprang on him, aired on GMA this morning, I wonder if he wishes he had just kept driving . . . or maybe hopped out of the cab and given Neil a little poke in the nose.
This clearly seemed to be an interview of the ambush sort, not something Levi had agreed to in advance. ABC apparently sent a crew up to Wasila to track Johnston down. As Karlinksy said in introducing the interview, “we found Levi Johnston,” and there he was in his pickup, looking about as comfortable as some corporate exec confronted by Mike Wallace.

a gotcha interview

Sorry, saw this question many hours late...
Another option, depending on your context, is the "gotcha" kind of interview in less serious journalistic circles. AKA gotcha journalism

(Gotcha = Engl slang for "Got you!" d.h. Hab' dich {kalt erwischt}!) Not sure if it's a term they also use in the UK, but it is definitely in current usage in the U.S.
