Italian term

ciascuna per la parte di propria competenza

Italian to English Law/Patents Law (general) clinical trials contracts -
This phrase appears in a contract between a sponsor, a university and a hospital for conducting a clinical trial. In the section on informed consent, the text reads:

"L'Azienda, l'Università e la Società si impegnano, **ciascuna per la parte di propria competenza** ad adottare tutte le misure di sicurezza sia tecniche sia organizzative ... al fine di proteggere i data raccolti nell'esecuzione dello studio ..."

How would we translate this little morsel of Italian legalese into correct English legalese?

Thank you for your help and support. Again.

You're welcome Joseph. Any reason why you went for "each independently" in the end? It doesn't quite cut the mustard in my opinion!

Other answers to this: For one ... I see that I asked a very similar question almost exactly one year ago; see: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/3829418 . My choice then was "each within its [own] sphere of competence"

In another document I was given to look at after I posted this question, the phrase "ciascuno per gli ambiti di propria competenze" was translated as "each in the fields of their competence"... this is just to show what another translator used ... not what I would choose.

This time ... I like "purview" because it covers the idea of "competence" and more. See this definition from the Merriam-Webster online dictionary: "the range or limit of authority, competence, responsibility, concern, or intention"

agree MSA-Translation : I like your translation except it needs to be "each according to ITS own purview."

actually, I'd probably say "their" since there seem to be various parties involved here. Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks, Ivana. I rest my case, as I really don't think there is anything wrong with saying "their" here, even though, technically, proprio refers to a singular subject.
agree ARS54 : ...with Michael, 'its' - riferito a "ciascuna", singolare in IT e in ENG

Note from asker:
Hi Rachel. Thank you for this suggestion, which I think is perfectly valid ... I happened to like the term "purview" as suggested by Federica (see my discussion note).
