Thanks José, when we were children we used to play with matchsticks as stakes but we still called it playing for love.

Not love = amor, but love = zero, as in tennis.

With cards, when we aren't playing for money (gambling), we say we are playing "for love".

To do something "just for the fun of it" means with no obligation, just to amuse oneself, without money being involved, etc.
