Russian term

спортивные трассы

Russian to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation Alpine skiing
a breakdown of the Olympic facilities at Sochi

I'm guessing the first "трассы" = "ski runs" but the "спортивные трассы" (measured in hectares)?? what's the difference between them?

Thank you, Leigh, But I am not able to post another answer in addition to what I have already posted :) I can only add a note to the existing one...
The meaning is that those ski runs will be used in professional competitions and, of course, in the Olympics.
Leigh Mosley (asker) Sep 27, 2011:
I think you got it. Thank you. For clarity's sake, I will suggest that the client use something like "43 hectares (9 km.) of Olympic ski runs." And if you'll make that an answer below - I'll be happy to accept it. But I'm not sure we should enter "Olympic ski runs" as a definition in the glossary for "спортивные трассы". It doesn't seem to me that the Russian term is always used to mean exactly this in other contexts that I have googled. (Although I agree that's what they mean here).
Svetlana Babrauskiene Sep 27, 2011:
Leigh, it actually turned out that the difference between the two lies in their puprose. Please see http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Роза_Хутор - Общая протяженность действующих в настоящее время трасс 38 км, в том числе олимпийских — 9 км.
The first ski run type is used for leisure activities, while the latter - for the Olympics. I suggest you also mention this difference in your translation.
Leigh Mosley (asker) Sep 27, 2011:
How about?? Pistes – totaling 38 km. in length
Ski slopes – 43 hectares (9 km.)
Leigh Mosley (asker) Sep 26, 2011:
sorry I should have been more specific These are the facilities at the Roza Khutor resort, which from what I can gather, is only hosting alpine events. But you might be exactly right with "piste." Can there be a downhill piste? I'm not at home so I'll have to google this a bit later tonight. Thanks!
Svetlana Babrauskiene Sep 26, 2011:
Leigh, is there any further context confirming that only ski racing is involved?
At this point what I can suggest more is only leisure skiing and competitions (that was an idea given by a friend of mine). But I see no point in measuring ski runs for competitions in hectares, while a cross-country track could cover a certain area...
Again - any further context?
Theodora OB Sep 26, 2011:
The winter Olympics will take place in Sochi in 2014 and there will no doubt be cross-country events for which cross-country pistes are needed.
Leigh Mosley (asker) Sep 26, 2011:
I'm afraid that I don't think cross-country skiing Is what they're talking about. Just the Downhill and Super Combined events.

I guess it's a cross-country skiing track, it may make a circle, that's why the area in hectares is indicated along with the length, and ski run is a track on a slope.

Taking into consideration the provided information, the difference between the two types of ski runs lies in their purpose - one is used for leisure activities, while the other - for professional competitions, namely the coming Olympics. We may say here 'Olympic ski run', I guess.
