Spanish term

actualidad

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
I'm translating an article on World Bank education loans and the term came up in the following context: "En el caso de evaluadores internacionales, deberá tenerse cuidado de equilibrar sus ventajas profesionales (experiencia, actualidad y calidad) con su natural falta de conocimiento y percepción de la realidad local". I know what they mean, but I can't say it "nicely". Please help!

current awareness / up-to-date knowledge

I think either one of those might work.

Because of the constantly changing nature of technology, it is essential for organizations to maintain ***current awareness*** as well as keeping their workers up-to-date on the technology they use. Some ways to do this include: newsletters, attending conferences, electronic discussion groups and circulating printed or online journals.

In order to maintain ***up-to-date knowledge*** in a particular field of study, professional scientists must regularly read appropriate magazines, professional journals, and science-related books.

agree Andy Watkinson : Think I'd also go for "up-to-date knowledge".

understanding of current issues OR updatedness

Declined
Two other alternatives you might like to consider: understanding of current issues - very correct, though a little longer than the Spanish actualidad.

Or 'updatedness', a term gaining popularity: "Officially, the quality, updatedness, or even authenticity of the information on the Internet is not controlled"

"it was a must that every enterprise, and even private persons, had to have their own home pages, although the updatedness and
reliability of which would frequently be questionable"

"In addition to the updatedness, this system offers excellent data security"

Peer comment(s):

agree Mayte Vega : I like 'updatedness' very much. It's short and clear. Nevertheless, 'actualidad' in the Spanish version is not correct in context.

Comment: "I also like "updatedness" but not in the context required, since it apparently refers more to data and objects than personal qualities. Thanks anyhow."
