Spanish term

afilada proa

Spanish to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation Surfing
Hi everyone,

This appears in a text I'm translating about surf breaks in the Basque Country:

La Izquierda de Zenitz

Durante la marea baja también se puede coger la ola de izquierda, pero la entrada y la salida pueden complicarse un poco, ya que para llegar al lugar hay que cruzar una ***afilada proa***.

I know 'proa' can mean 'prow', but I'm not convinced that it has anything to do with a boat/ship in this context. The word appears several times throughout the text.

Many thanks in advance.

Jack

I think Andrés is correct.... it is figure of speech.
Andres Fekete Apr 9, 2013:
It's tough to reach this wave at low tide because first you have to walk across sharp rocks in order to reach the water. These rocks most likely form a V shaped protrusion into the water.

prow

Many prow-shaped rocks or vertical edges where cliff-faces join are know as prows, because that is what they look like.
A quick google for cliff prow or rock prow will turn up dozens.
This particular one must make surfing risky as it seems to jut out into the channel leading to the surfing area

agree Charles Davis : Ah! That makes perfect sense.
