ProZ.com powwow: Business for translatorsNovember 9, 2013, 2:00 pm SwedenMalmöIn personEnglish Dear all,
In the previous powwows we had participants who came from very far away, driving up to two hours to be with us, or coming from Copenhagen, so, as much as I think that chatting away freely is great, it made me think that we could all benefit from having more structured meetings, where we can narrow the discussed topics a bit more, for the sake of using our time together in the best possible way.
So, from now on, our powwows will have a theme. Better, another theme, as the previous one was “Networking and fika”, which is a pretty cool theme, don’t you think?
The coming themes are not intended to compromise our spontaneity or to keep the meetings restricted to a subject only, by any means. They are simply aimed to keep our focus, for a certain amount of time, in one subject that might be interesting for all the participants during the powwows.
There won’t be any clock ticking to start or stop talking about a specific subject. I think we can simply go around the table hearing about each other’s experience on a giving topic and we can take the chance to share relevant resources with everybody (recommended reading, courses, companies, contacts, tools, technical tips, sites, blogs, etc, etc) that might be useful to all fellow translators.
I took the liberty of choosing the theme for our next meeting. It is “Business for translators”. It is a more general theme, that probably could be broken down in several subtopics later on, but for now I think it could be a good start. Something like an overview getting into this business and becoming a translator.
So, on the 9 of November, please feel free to share any experience, skill or tool you had to learn to establish your translation business (whether as a freelance or as an in-house translator). You can bring any material or information you see fit: titles of books, articles, podcast, photos, lists, links… anything really.
At the end of our next meeting we can assess how productive this was and decide what our next theme will be. How does that sound?
There will be time for silly talk, laughs, jokes and fika, as always! I promise.
I look forward to meeting you all again!
Kind regards,
Nicole
