Topics for discussion

I believe it would be in the interest of everone if, besides the pleasant get-to-know-one-another, there would be some topics of mutual interest that could be discussed. Some suggestions: > - How to handle test translations > - Proofreading cooperation between translators > - Payments procedure for small orders (PayPal etc.) > - Suggestions on improving/changing ProZ It might be interesting to know what our problems are, how our environment is developing, and what we can maybe do to change it positively. Suggestions of other topics are welcome, of course!! And maybe someone wants to prepare such a topic, for instance with a survey of some of the colleagues.
Let's not just get together, but also work together! See you there, Alexander Schleber ▲ Collapse

So far, 7 persons have already agreed - enthusiastically - to postpone the Brussels Powwow to February 2. So I booked a room for us in the afternoon of Saturday February 2, i.e. the Seashell Room (le Salon des Coquillages) at Les Salons de l’Atalaïde, 89, chaussée de Charleroi, 1060 Bruxelles. See their website for details (http://www.lessalonsatalaide.be).
I hope to see you there...
Brigitte

I look forward in exchanging information and continuing conversations in the vein Alexander is proposing. Does anyone have any old dictionaries or MultiTerm entries they want to sell or exchange?

Some extra subjects
Jan 18, 2002
Globalization and translator training/education. Professional standing of translators. Membership of Associations and should associations determine the rates (e.g.-B.K.V.T.F) Payment-terms of Belgian agencies. Discounts for the use of Trados, Déjà Vu... How and with who should I team up in order to ensure quality.

I have seen the location and now I see all these subjects and frankly I'm beginning to fear that this is going to be too formal. The Powwow in Brugge was great. All we did was have a drink (well, lots of drinks) together and the subjects you really want to discuss pop up anyway, without planning them. So, let's make this an informal get-together to start with, and the rest will follow automatically.

Subjects at PowWow
Jan 18, 2002
It seems that some ProZ members are more for informal meetings, no structure, no sibjects, no lengthy discussions. Well, for that I do not have to take a day off from work and travel to Brussels. Don't get me wrong. I love my glass of wine and "een gezellige babbel" just as much as anyone. The reason we are suggesting the topics now is so that everyone can sort of think through, whether they ahve anything of interest to contribute. If no one comes up with anything, then that is that.... See more

The reason we are suggesting the topics now is so that everyone can sort of think through, whether they ahve anything of interest to contribute. If no one comes up with anything, then that is that. And it also should not only be a "complaints session". The tie that binds us (ProZ) gives us a unique opportunity to perhaps find some more cohesion in a rather chaotic market place. Maybe we should just set a limit on the discussion part and then continue with the fun. Alexander ▲ Collapse

I agree with Alexander that . . .
Jan 18, 2002
. . .we should have an agenda for the evening and the best time to create the structure is now! We can have a good time after business has been discussed. For instance, I would be happy to bring my laptop to demonstrate Trados and discuss the pros and cons with anyone who has questions, for let's say, half an hour. Perhaps someone else wants to take a different subject that he or she wants to discuss before or after the Trados demo for another half an hour. I look forward to discussing pr... See more

Perhaps it would be best if Alexander would draw up the agenda for this reason.
Like King Darling, I fear that this occasion could become far too formal. This is a powwow: an informal gathering where all the subjects mentioned will pop up anyway. I try not to work in the weekends, although I often don't have a choice. If you really want to make it a working session with a tight structure and (if all goes well) some drinks afterwards, I think that you have a different kind of gathering in mind. But for such an info & discussion session, I would prefer to take a day off from work during the week, and not in the weekends. I fear that we want to do too much in too little time and that may well ruin the occassion... ▲ Collapse

Themes vs. Fun
Jan 18, 2002
OK. The opinions are divided and I do not think voting on this question is really called for. So let us keep it informal. Those that nevertheless want to discuss some more serious aspects - well, we will probably find one another anyway.
But I would really like to take this opportunity to say, that we should not give up the thematic thing that easily. So I will make a suggestion to organize a "Theme PowWow" in Antwerp which: a) will have a structure, b) wil... See more

But I would really like to take this opportunity to say, that we should not give up the thematic thing that easily. So I will make a suggestion to organize a "Theme PowWow" in Antwerp which: a) will have a structure, b) will have keynote sopeakers c) for which I may even invite some industry representatives for those items of interest to us, and where d) the drinks and fun will be reserved for the pauses between sessions, and maybe a dinner afterwards.
