Bengali to English: Independence Day observed in New York General field: Other Detailed field: Media / Multimedia
Translation - English The 38th Independence Day of Bangladesh was observed at Brooklyn in New York City on Saturday evening, the 29th of March. Amid a vibrant presence of about a dozen mainstream politicians, lawyers, social workers and the Consul General of Bangladesh in New York, the occasion organized by Sandweep Association paved the way for presenting the history and cultural tradition of Bangladesh in their undistorted form. Many believe the occasion would bring about further change among the Americans in their outlook about the toiling Bengali community in Brooklyn.
English to Bengali: South Asia Hunger General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Source text - English A UN report says hunger in South Asia has reached its highest level in 40 years because of food and fuel price rises and the global economic downturn.
The report by the UN children's fund, Unicef, says that 100 million more people in the region are going hungry compared with two years ago.
It names the worst affected areas as Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The report says South Asia's governments need to urgently increase social spending to meet the challenge.
It says that climate change and urbanisation also need tackling.
According to the World Bank, three quarters of the population in South Asia - almost 1.2 billion people - live on less than $2 a day. And more than 400m people in the region are now chronically hungry.
The report focused on the impact the economic crisis had on women and children, saying they are the people most vulnerable during a downturn.

Translation - Bengali

A debate is running between the heart and the head.
The heart says I should welcome the Indian government's move under which attempts are being made to make education compulsory for children aged between six and 14 years.
But the head in contrast is worried to think about the future of these children.
Having passed the eighth class, a 14 year old child would not be able to continue the studies despite an ardent desire. May be his (or her) financial condition would not allow this.
He would not be able to enter a job, as this would fall within the category of child labour.
My critics would raise the point that I am pessimistic, finding faults with a good issue instead of being happy. But what should I do....?
After 62 years of independence, after one generation has reached the threshold of old age, and after the next generation has completed the studies through struggles, or failed to complete due to some bindings, awareness grew in the government about it.
What should I do? Should I applaud the move or should I weep over thoughts of what would be the outcome of such incomplete steps.
Oh come on, let the child pass at least the tenth class. Are you expecting from their parents that they should be accumulating money right from now on, so that they can afford the cost of the expensive two year studies?
Then another question is: with only 25 percent children having reached the benefits of it, what would happen to the remaining 75 percent? Or is getting just one quarter of them educated the solution to all the problems?
But there is no contradiction over the fact that it is definitely a step forward in the direction of progress.
Better late than never!
