English to French: Alienation and Acceleration (Hartmut Rosa) General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Source text - English The most promising route for a contemporary version of Critical Theory lies in a critical test of social practices in the light of the conceptions of the good life held by social actors themselves. Thus, it is my conviction (derived, to some considerable degree, from the works of the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor) that human subjects in their actions and decisions are always guided by some (conscious and reflexive or implicit and unarticulated) conception of the good life.

Source text - English Images no doubt are faster than words, let alone arguments, they exert instant, if largely non-conscious, effects. The better argument becomes powerless in the face of dynamic waves of opinion-formation: In light of this, it is no chance that media stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nicolas Sarkozy or Silvio Berlusconi gain office and power and that there seems to be an ‘aesthetic turn’ in politics: Elections are won by the ‘coolness’ of politicians or movements, not by thorough concepts, programs or complex argumentations.

Source text - English Such a number would involve an infinitesimal, meaning a literally infinitely small mathematical entity. You might recall infinitesimals from college math. You may well however not recall—probably because you were not told—that infinitesimals made the foundations of the calculus extremely shaky and controversial for 200 years, and for much the same reason that Cantor’s transfinite math was met with such howling skepticism in the late 1800s: nothing has caused math more problems—historically, methodologically, metaphysically—than infinite quantities.
Translation - French Un tel nombre impliquerait une quantité infinitésimale, c’est-à-dire, littéralement, une entité mathématique infiniment petite.

Source text - English From the 5th century AD, the government financed a system of schools to educate selected young boys aspiring for highly valued civil-service positions; mathematics was among the fields required for the entrance examinations to these positions. The Japanese adopted Chinese writing at this time and also took over the hierarchical and bureaucratic system of China, but the Japanese government did not finance education, nor did the Japanese develop the adopted mathematical knowledge any further. It was only in the Edo period (1600–1868) that mathematics suddenly aroused great interest throughout the population and underwent a breathtaking development. This was triggered by the 1627 publication of Yoshida Mitsuyoshi’s Jinkoki (Unalterable Treatise), a book based on an earlier Chinese work (Cheng Dawai’s Suanfa Tongzong, or “Unified Teachings of Mathematical Methods”) that became an instant bestseller and can be seen as the beginning of wasan or indigenous Japanese mathematics.

Source text - English Known particles mixed with unknown ones spring out from the collisions accompanied by their inverted double or antagonist: antiparticles. The final (expected) result is finding the missing links in the model of the micro-cosmos: the mysterious Higgs boson, dark matter particles, or maybe even a sign that energy has been carried away into extra-dimensions.

Source text - English Those who write and publish in such circumstances inevitably shape the public sphere, without actually being in full ownership of their voice. Textual parts in question are being marked and the writer himself is being asked to either delete or replace those passages. He thus ends up acting as an extension of the censoring body, changing his own work. This kind of ‘self-censorship’ is being done carefully. The writer tries to somehow restore the (politically) problematic parts and to keep the meaning and the flow of his poems intact. It has become an elaborate tradition among cultural producers to develop a coded language, which only a small circle of intellectuals would be familiar with. But, since formally the structure of the poems is being kept intact, the hand of censorship remains imperceptible to the broader public. The only evidence of the political encroachment is a loose sheet of paper, which inofficially documents the changes made and which serves no one else but the author to retrace his original writing.
