Source text - English Everyone loves a beautifully bronzed body and we all feel the need to have “holiday skin” when we return from a beach holiday. But with all the bad press about the sun damaging our skin, premature ageing, not to mention skin cancer; is the sun really that bad? I’m sorry to say the answer is YES!
If you are a sun worshipper you put yourself at serious risk. Not only will years of sunbathing produce a leather-like skin, it increases your risk of skin cancer. That said it is perfectly possible to achieve a healthy holiday glow without cooking yourself on the beach and spending half your holiday treating sunburn. You need to spend time in the shade, not spend long periods in the sun and a good quality high factor lotion that you re-apply regularly will protect you when you are exposed. Your skin will still produce some colour as it’s natural defence to the increased sun exposure is to darken the skin, however no burning will occur or damage to your skin. You may not be as brown as your mate who fried themselves in baby oil for the whole holiday but in future years you’ll look ten years younger!
Interesting fact: Up until the late Victorian era it was actually fashionable to be paler. Tanned skin was associated with working outside and therefore lower class. Even today in places such as India and parts of Japan, paler skin is preferred resulting in cases of skin bleaching. In the western world it wasn’t until the 1920’s when Coco Chanel accidentally got sunburnt whilst visiting the French Riviera that a trend was set and many started to follow.
