The origin of Erdman's fascination with problems related to the intelligentsia can be shown to have two unexpected sources: Dostoevsky's novel Бесы and Aleksandr Blok's essays on the problem of the intelligentsia vis a vis revolution. Not only were these two writers the object of great interest among the intelligentsia immediately before and after the revolution, but Erdman was known to admire both.i More important, of course, are the undeniable echoes of these writer's works in Erdman's work.
Numerous commentators on Erdman's plays mention connections to the grotesque of Gogol and Sukhovo-Kobylin, and many productions of his plays incorporate the traditions of Ostrovsky, vaudeville and the cabaret, but seldom have his works been seen as a response to the dark, psychological grotesque that characterizes Dostoevsky's works.ii In fact, the internal nature of Semyon's predicament owes a great deal to Dostoevsky's psychological phantasmagorias.
Even something as basic as Semyon's status as an unemployed worker can be shown to have a link to the Dostoevskian world.iii The psychic tension of such characters as Marmeladov and Rodion Raskolnikov is, at least in part, a result of their inability to find a source of income. This tension – their anxiety about money – is such that it informs their entire perception of themselves as private and public beings. This is precisely the case of Podsekalnikov in Самоубийца, and, in fact, echoes that of Gulyachkin in Мандат (where the tension arises not as a result of money or employment, but from his need to find a place in society). While unemployment in the Soviet Union was on the rise in the early 1920s, it seems clear that in Самоубийца, Erdman, like Dostoevsky, was drawn to explore a pathological state of mind more than a social problem.
Самоубийца and many of Dostoevsky’s novels illustrate a "positive,” grand Idea taking precedence over life. In Самоубийца – a dramatic work, of course – we are never privy to the thought processes or the personal experiences that lead such characters as Aristarkh Dominikovich or Viktor Viktorovich to their current state of mind. As is fitting of comic, dramatic characters, they are presented as hermetic embodiments of an Idea. And yet they have affinities with the Dostoevskian world for they harbor a deadly serious belief in the righteousness of their Idea. At the same time, the seriousness with which they relate to their Idea and to themselves is utterly incompatible with the reality of the world in which they function. This paradoxical mix is an essential element in Erdman's special brand of comedy. It is an uneasy, tragi-farcical comedy that defies perfect definition, much in the way that Marmeladov's situation in Crime and Punishment paradoxically is both comic and tragic.
Бесы and Самоубийца share stylistic, tactical and textual similarities, as well as a similarity in plot complication. In both works an intellectual offers to write the suicide note for a suicide victim. During their first long meeting Verkhovensky twice tells Kirillov that he will help him write his suicide note,iv and in the actual suicide scene, he even offers to dictate the note to him: "Я, впрочем, продиктую. Вам ведь все равно. Неужели вас могло бы беспокоить содержание в такую минуту?" (с. 466). During the first meeting between Aristarkh and Semyon, the former explains why the latter is committing suicide and then suggests: “Вы составьте конспектик предсмертной записочки… или, может быть, я лучше сам напишу, а вы просто подпишите и застрелитесь».v Shortly thereafter, Aristarkh again echoes Verkhovensky's words: "Вам терять теперь нечего. Вам теперь ничего не страшно. Вы свободный теперь, гражданин Подсекальников» (с. 108). In both works when the act of suicide is brought into doubt, suggestions are made by others that it might be best merely to kill the potential suicide, although these scenes are played out very differently in the two works. Once Verkhovensky has in his possession Kirillov's note, he thinks to himself, "Что ж, убить теперь можно… С этой бумагой никак не подумают, что я убил» (с. 474). In Erdman's version the scene is played out more farcically and more absurdly.

Особый интерес Эрдмана к проблемам интеллигенции можно рассмотреть с точки зрения двух неожиданных первоисточников: романа Достоевского «Бесы» и сочинений Александра Блока по проблемам интеллигенции и революции. Эти два автора не только пользовались большим успехом среди представителей интеллигенции незадолго до и сразу же после революции - известно и то, что сам Эрдман восхищался обоими.i Но, конечно же, самое важное, это явные повторения, перекличка, эхо работ этих авторов в работе Эрдмана.
Бесчисленное множество рецендентов Эрдмана отмечают общие черты с гротеском Гоголя и Сухово-Кобылина, кроме того, многие постановки его пьес объединяют в себе традиции Островского, водевиля и кабаре, однако же очень редко его работы рассматриваются как ответ на темный, психологический гротеск, который присущ работам Достоевского.ii На самом же деле, внутренняя природа затруднительного положения Семена во многом обязана своим происхождением психологическим фантасмагориям Достоевского.
Даже такая элементарная деталь как то, что Семен безработный, может рассматриваться как первый намёк на достоевскианский мотив.iii Эмоционально-психологическое напряжение таких персонажей как Мармеладов и Родион Раскольников по крайней мере частично, но является результатом их неспособности найти источник дохода. Это напряжение – их мучительное беспокойство по поводу денег – таково, что всецело формирует их восприятие самих себя и в качестве индивидов, и как членов социума. То же самое происходит и с Подсекальниковым в «Самоубийце», и, более того, эта ситуация во многом повторяет ситуацию Гулячкина в «Мандате» (где напряженность возникает не в результате проблем с деньгами или работой, а от его потребности обрести своё место в обществе). Несмотря на то, что в начале 1920-х годов безработица в Советском Союзе находилась на пике, очевидно, что в «Самоубийце», Эрдман, как и Достоевский, стремился исследовать патологическое состояние сознания, нежели социальную проблему.
«Самоубийца» как и многие из романов Достоевского демонстрирует «абсолютную», величайшую Идею, имеющую преимущественное право даже перед самой жизнью. В «Самоубийце» – тем не менее, бесспорно, драматическом произведении – нас никогда не посвящают в мыслительные процессы или личный опыт, который приводит таких персонажей как Аристарх Доминикович или Виктор Викторович к их текущему состоянию.
Как и свойственно комическим, драматическим персонажам, они представлены как герметичные воплощения Идеи. И, тем не менее, они прочно связаны с достоевскианским миром, потому как внутренне они вынашивают смертельно сильную веру в праведность своей Идеи. В то же самое время серьезность, с которой они относятся к своей Идее и к себе, совершенно несовместима с действительностью мира, в котором они живут. Это парадоксальное сочетание и есть важнейший элемент в особом «брэнде» комедии «по-эрдмановски». Это – неловкая, тревожная, траги-фарсовая комедия, которая не поддается точному определению, во многом напоминает ситуацию Мармеладова в «Преступлении и Наказании», где он поразительно смешон и трагичен одновременно.
«Бесы» и «Самоубийца» схожи в плане стилистики, синтаксиса и текстового построения, а также имеют общие черты в сюжетной линии. В обоих произведениях интеллектуал предлагает написать предсмертную записку для самоубийцы. Во время их первой долгой встречи Верховенский дважды говорит Кириллову, что поможет ему написать предсмертную записку, iv а непосредственно в сцене самоубийства он даже предлагает ему продиктовать эту записку: «Я, впрочем, продиктую. Вам ведь все равно. Неужели вас могло бы беспокоить содержание в такую минуту?» (с. 466). Andreas Merz’ Titus Andronicus - a radical take on Shakespeare's bloodiest play that was a mix of farce, grotesque and comics.
Merz' actors squealed like children, played with masks, splattered tomato-juice blood all over themselves, sang like karaoke stars, cooked up real salads and pancakes, and hopped around like bunny rabbits in the telling of the tale of a ruthless king and the vengeance his top general takes on him for his murderous cruelty. The result was a jarring and often rudely funny parody of corrupt, two-faced, power-hungry individuals. For the most part the perfidy of Shakespeare's play was turned upside down and mocked by the director and his actors, although a remarkably straightforward performance of Titus by Valery Yemelyanov never allowed the sense of horror to be lost entirely. It was a tight-rope walk of a show that left some spectators furious, others confused and others quite enthusiastic.

Постановка Андреаса Мерца «Титус Андроникус» - радикальный взгляд на самую кровавую пьесу Шекспира, смесь фарса, гротеска и комиксов.
Актёры Мерца визжали, как дети, играли с масками, брызгались кровью из томатного сока, пели, как звезды караоке, готовили настоящие салаты и блинчики, прыгали вокруг как зайчики, рассказывая историю безжалостного короля и мести, которую на тирана за его зверскую жестокость обрушил его первый генерал. В результате получилась резкая, одновременно грубоватая и смешная пародия на продажных, двуличных, голодных до власти людей. Большая часть вероломных предательств шекспировской пьесы была перевернута с ног на голову и осмеяна режиссёром и артистами, при этом невероятно прямолинейная игра Титуса (засл. арт. РФ Валерий Емельянов) не позволяла ощущению ужаса полностью покинуть сцену. Этот спектакль — прогулка по канату над пропастью — кого-то из зрителей оставил в бешенстве, других смутил, третьих привёл в восторг».

«Титус Андроникус» который шел последним в лаборатории, поверг в шок публику и расколол ее на противников и впавших в восторг. Андреас Мерц попытался совместить черную комедию с трагическим смыслом, заложенным в пьесе. История, начавшаяся эстетически изысканно, точно на натюрмортах старых голландцев (стол, украшенный фруктами, винами), постепенно наполнялась бутафорскими отрезанными конечностями, головами и бесчисленными трупами и завершилась полной разрухой на сцене. В этой театральной свалке терялась нить повествования, путались персонажи, нарушая стиль. Одного из них играл актер, похожий на премьер-министра России, что только добавляло «Титусу» внешней актуальности.

«Titus Andronicus» went down on the audience like a bomb and knocked it sideways, cleaving it in two poles – antagonists and admirers. Andreas Merz superposed black comedy with tragical sense, rooted in the play. The story, which began so aesthetically exquisite (a table in the center of the stage, dressed with fruits and wine) indeed as if an Old Holland still-life painting came to life, gradually was flooded with chopped off buttafory body limbs, heads and corpses, eventually ending up in perfect breakdown on the stage. In this theatre junkheap the narrative thread blanks out, characters clot and tangle, fracturing the style. One of the characters was performed by an actor looking very much alike with the Russian premier minister, which only replenished the relevance and urgent character of the staging.

10 апреля в ТЮЗе состоялась премьера спектакля «Святая Иоанна» по пьесе Бертольда Брехта в постановке Андреаса Мерца.
Америка 30-х, экономика в лихорадке, мясозаводчик Маулер разоряет конкурента, в итоге рабочие оказываются на улице. Маулер продолжает извлекать выгоду из казалось бы безнадежного положения: несколько раз он стоит на пороге разорения, но новый хитрый ход помогает ему оказаться в выигрыше. Иоанна раздает бесплатный суп рабочим во имя Господа, но, узнав, что ее благотворительная организация пытается тоже извлечь барыши из бедственного положения, протестует, поэтому начинает действовать в одиночку. Разделив судьбу безработных, Иоанна умирает от воспаления легких, ее провозглашают святой.
Спектакль поставлен в стилистике постдраматического театра: тяжеловесный брехтовский текст (не спасает даже стихотворная форма), помноженный на сюжетные хитросплетения биржевых и торговых махинаций, оказывается вторичен. Главное – попасть в ритм, отдаться ему и продираться вместе с героями через эту тьму, качаясь на волнах: постепенно набирающая обороты патетика (вверх!) превращается в пародию на саму себя (вниз!). Видеокамера выводит крупный план актеров, находящихся в глубине сцены, на два больших экрана, почему-то это черно-белое изображение смотришь как немое кино. Текст важен и не важен: то вдруг трижды, как заклинание, повторяются подробности махинаций Маулера, то звучит длинный монолог на немецком, и он не менее органичен!
Бескромиссная и наивная Иоанна (Александра Карельских) то распевает как юродивая, вызывая нервную дрожь у зрителей, то горячо и убежденно наставляет: «Заботьтесь не о том, чтоб, мир сей покидая, хорошими вы сами были, но о том, чтоб мир покинуть вам Хорошим!» Чистая душа, обреченная в мире, где правит холодный расчет, на гибель… но это неважно, потому что в ближайшем «Медиамаркте» распродажа телевизоров!
Большевики размахивают красным флагом, рабочие поют «Интернационал», заводчик Грэхем в исполнении Татьяны Чупиковой одевается в алое платье (не иначе как от отчаяния), Маулер зажигает под «California Dreamin'», а в конце спектакля зрители поют вместе с актерами «Наш мир похож на сказочный рай»… Равнодушных не останется: образы, явленные саратовскому зрителю немецким режиссером, надолго оседают в сознании, взрывая серость жадной до денег повседневности.

Saint Joan: post-dramatic theater in Saratov Kiselev theater
On the 10th of April an opening show of the play “Saint Joan” based on a play by Bertolt Brecht staged by Andreas Merz took place in Saratov Kiselev theater.
America of the 30s, economy is in fever, meat producer Mauler impoverishes his competitor, as a result the workers find themselves in the street. Mauler continues to derive benefit from seemingly hopeless situations: several times he turns out to be on the verge of losing everything, but a new canny move helps him to jackpot again and again. Johanna dispenses free soups to the workers in the name of God, but when she finds out that her charity organisation also tries to gain profit out of misery, she protests and starts acting on her own. Sharing the destiny of the unemployed Johanna dies from pneumonia and is proclaimed a saint.
The production is staged in the style of post-drama theater: the heavy-handed brechtian text, multiplied on the plot intricacies of commercial and stock machinations, appears to be secondary. The key is to make it into the rhythm, surrender yourself to it and scramble through this darkness together with the characters, rocking on the waves: the gradually building up pathetics (up!) turns into a parody on itself (down!). Videocamera shows the actors, who are in the backstage, in a close-up; the picture is beamed on two large screens, and for some reason this black and white video is perceived as silent movie. The text is important and at the same time not important: suddenly the details of Mauler's speculations are repeated three like a conjuration, and then on a snap we hear a long monologue in German, and it is not less natural!
Straight-out and naive Johanna (Alexandra Karelskih) is either singing as a God's fool, giving the audience a nervous chill, or tutoring fiercely and confidently: Take care that when you leave the world, you have not merely been good, but are leaving a better world!”. A pure soul is doomed to death in the world where the cold calculus rules… But it is not important, because in the nearest “Media Markt” there is a sell-out of TV-sets!
Bolsheviki are swaying the red flag, the workers are singing “International”, the meat producer Graham, performed by Tatyana Chupikova, puts on a scarlet dress (obviously from despair), Mauler is kicking off to “California Dreamin'“, and at the end of the show the audience sings together with the actors “Our world is like a fairytale heaven”... There are no indifferent people left in the audience: the visions presented by the German director to Saratov audience, sink down in the consciousness for a long time, exploding the greyness of hungry for money daily life.

When the sun is shining, the dust,
When it's raining, the dirt!
And always sweat and blood!"
When the 28-year old Ödön von Horváth, son of a diplomate, offered his play "Revolte auf Côte 3018" to the Volksbühne in 1929, he pretended to be member of the working class himself. This way he tried to prove his status as a social revolutionary and increase his proletarian credibility. In a historical setting Horváth tells the story of the working men Moser, Oberle and of Max Schulz, a job seeking hairdresser from Berlin. They are working in unhuman conditions between the gorges of Tirol, constructing a technological masterpiece: a nearly two-mile long cable railway up to the Zugspitze – for pittances; forced by an ambitious engineer and stock holders, who suck the blood out of the workers for their own benefit. A revolt is planned, shots are fired, people are killed. But has the situation of the exploited productive forces within the capitalist order really changed - as Karl Marx had envisioned? Horváth doubts it: his workers anticipate a society in which the victim-perpetrator pattern transforms into unconditional self-exploitation and talks of breaking free lead only to stabilization of their hamster-existence.

Когда 28-летний Эдён фон Хорват, сын дипломата, предложил театру Фольксбюне в 1929 году свою пьесу «Горная Узкоколейка» для постановки, он сам «прикинулся» представителем рабочего класса. Таким образом, он хотел подтвердить свой статус социал-революционера и повысить свой пролетарский кредит доверия. На фоне развития исторических событий Хорват рассказывает историю рабочих Мозера и Оберле, а также Макса Шульца, парикмахера из Берлина в поисках работы.
