Japanese to English: Solvent-based 3-Wet-coat Metallic Coating System for Automobile

近年、自動車塗装を取り巻く環境は大きな変革期を迎えている。世界的な地球環境保護活動の高まりから環境負荷物質の削減が重要な課題となっている。環境保護が進んでいる欧州では、環境負荷物質であるVOC削減のために水性塗料の採用が進んでいる。日本では水性化も進められているが、塗装ロッボトの導入による塗着効率の向上や洗浄シンナーの回収等によりVOCの排出量削減に取り組んでいる。もうひとつの環境負荷物質であるエネルギーを消費することにより発生するCO2削減のためには、今後、省工程、省スペースが不可欠となってくる。これは自動車メーカーにとって生産性の向上にも繋がる。既に、エネルギーが多く消費されている塗装ブースや焼付け乾燥炉のうち中塗焼き付け乾燥炉が廃止できる中塗/ベース/クリヤーを焼き付けずに塗り重ねる3WET工程を採用している自動車メーカーもある。ただし、VOC削減に効果のある水性塗料を採用した場合、あらかじめ水を揮発さておくプレヒート炉が必要となる。また環境対応以外には、自動車メーカーの販売競争が激化するなか品質は言うまでもなく低コスト化が可能な塗料の開発が今まで以上に求められている。つまり、今我々に求められているものは「環境」「生産性」「品質」「コスト」に対応可能な塗料の開発である。
そこで、塗料的なVOC削減効果はさほどではないがCO2削減には最も効果のある溶剤3WETの開発を行なった。溶剤3WETは中塗焼き付け乾燥炉が廃止できるため省工程化、低コスト化に繋がり、品質が確保できれば現在求められている要求を全て満足できる。本報告では、3WET工程での品質確保のための技術について紹介する。
2.3-Wet-Coat Systemの開発の考え方と工程の概要
3WET工程と現行2C1B工程の塗膜構成を図1に示す。3WET工程は現行2C1B工程では中塗り塗装後焼付けを行なうが焼き付けずに中塗り、ベース、クリヤーを塗り重ねるWet on Wet塗装システムである。なお、本報では3WET工程の中塗りを第1ベース、ベースを第2ベースと称する。

In recent past we have seen many changes in automobile painting methods. The global environmental awareness is increasing and it is becoming priority. The Europe has advanced towards water based paints, which have low VOC level. Japan also has opted for water based paints as well as other solutions like implementation of Robotic Application, recycling of washing thinner etc. to reduce VOC. Simultaneously there are other concerns like how to reduce energy consumption, how to lower CO2 emissions, so it is becoming need of time to shorten the process and space. The automobile manufacturer expects the additional benefits like increasing the productivity from these environmental countermeasures.
Now some of the automobile manufacturers have started using the 3 Wet Coat Painting system which eliminates the Primer Oven by using Primer and Base coat suitable for Wet on Wet application. However if the Water Based Paint is chosen for low VOC, then it requires the additional energy, as the system needs Pre-heating stage. Considering the price competition in market the automobile manufacturer prefers the solution having low VOC and also which is cost effective. Thus it becomes a challenge for paint manufacturer to develop a product, which is environment friendly, cost effective and the one which can deliver higher productivity and good appearance. So we have developed the environment friendly Solvent Based 3 Wet coating product which has low emission of CO2, though it is bit less VOC efficient than Water based paints. As 3 Wet coat system allows the elimination of Primer oven, it has advantage of less process time and it requires less space; it is ideal for Automobile manufacturer when it gives the paint the desired film appearance quality. In my presentation I would like to explain how the desired film appearance qualities are achieved in 3 Wet coat Painting system.
2. The outline of concept and process behind development of 3 Wet coat Painting System
In the Figure 1 the comparison is shown for film structure of conventional primer plus 2C1B metallic paint system and the 3 Wet coat metallic paint system. The conventional system needs baking of primer and baking of Base Coat Metallic and Clear top coat together. In the 3 Wet Coat painting system the Primer, the Base coat and Clear coat are applied wet on wet without baking Primer and finally baked together. We call this suitably designed Primer as 1st Base coat, we apply 2nd Base coat on it followed by Clear coat and bake them together.
