Source text - English Situated cognition
One important discussion in informal (and formal) learning is the understanding of situated cognition and enculturation. Reading 1.2 contains an extract of some of these ideas. Situate cognition and enculturation may be credited to the work of Lev Vygotsky.
The theoretical contention behind these ideas is that a person’s development (and hence learning) is always situated, socially and culturally. What this means then, is that learning must be contextualised in a particular sociocultural setting.
For example, the teaching of addition/subtraction in financial mathematics should be done at the local market. Likewise, learning how to swim should be done at the local swimming pool (and not really in a tutorial workshop).
