That was his first thought as he scrambled to his knees and took in the panorama of the storage area. Countless human carcases hung from hooks— legs, arms, and heads removed and stacked neatly on benches ready for packaging. Arsenio—he who only wanted to buy the latest issue of Time magazine— now hung from one such hook, his eyes glassy and staring, his lower jaw missing. He had been hollowed out, his disembowelled body hanging obscenely from the hook and chain which were embedded into his back.

The mantra repeated itself in Garrett’s head, and indeed, it was true. Arsenio was absent from the waist down. Across the room was an old wooden butchery table stained with what looked to be a lifetime’s worth of blood. The huge bear of a man standing behind it— all forearms and bad intentions. His slick head was spattered with blood. There was no mistake. He could only have been the butcher. He was busy de-jointing Arsenio’s left leg, the lower half hanging at a nauseating angle. The butcher paused, the large cleaver still embedded in the knee joint.
“You can’t come in here!” he bellowed, glaring at Garrett, who was now up to his knees and unable to do anything but stare. He scrambled to his feet and backpedalled, grabbing Leena, who was about to enter the room.

Fu il suo primo pensiero quando si alzò sulle ginocchia e osservò la scena che gli si parava davanti nel magazzino. Innumerevoli carcasse umane erano appese a dei ganci-gambe, braccia e teste erano state rimosse e impilate ordinatamente sui bancali, pronte per essere confezionate. Arsenio-che voleva solo comprare l’ultima copia del Time–ora pendeva da uno dei ganci, con gli occhi vitrei sbarrati e privo della mandibola. Era stato sventrato e il suo corpo eviscerato pendeva oscenamente, appeso al soffitto tramite una catena assicurata al gancio che gli era stato conficcato nella schiena.

Garrett si ripeteva mentalmente la frase come un mantra e, in effetti, essa corrispondeva a verità. Ad Arsenio mancava la parte inferiore del corpo, dai fianchi in giù. Dall’altra parte della stanza c’era un vecchio tavolo da macellaio in legno, imbevuto del sangue che una persona avrebbe prodotto in una vita intera. Dietro di esso si trovava un uomo delle dimensioni di un orso-tutto avambracci e cattive intenzioni. La sua testa lucida era macchiata di sangue. Non ci si poteva sbagliare. Poteva essere solo il macellaio. Era intento a disarticolare la gamba sinistra di Arsenio, la cui metà inferiore era piegata in un angolo la cui vista gli fece venire la nausea. Il macellaio si interruppe con la mannaia ancora infilata nella giuntura del ginocchio.
«Non si può entrare qui dentro!» tuonò, lanciando un’occhiataccia a Garrett che, inginocchiato, non riusciva a far altro che fissarlo. Si alzò a fatica e indietreggiò, afferrando Leena che stava per entrare nella stanza.

To the Westerners in this hospital and especially to the woman Quagebuur, I say, ‘Fuck you and may you rot in hell.’

Translation - Italian Quindici minuti circa prima di Al-Thar.
Dopo il tormento e l’umiliazione che ho subito nelle ultime settimane, ho solo una certezza cristallina in testa; la vendetta è l’unico modo per uscire da questa situazione in modo onorevole.
Barricato in questa stanza, fissando lo specchio che ho deliberatamente posto di fronte a me, indirizzo con la mente un messaggio al mio khaal, Bashar al-Assad, padrone della Siria:
“Tieni la testa alta, onorato zio di ogni alawita, allarga le braccia, estendi il tuo shabh fino a quando la tua ombra non coprirà tutti i cittadini siriani, comandando di obbedire o morire.”
