Source text - English For millions of American schoolchildren, particularly in the Northeast, the Tuesday after Labor Day traditionally marks the end of summer vacation and a return to their classrooms. But this year, instead of boarding buses and lugging backpacks, most of those students are opening their laptops at home as schools commence the fall term virtually amid the pandemic.
Classes started Tuesday in some of the nation’s largest districts, including Chicago, Houston, Dallas and Baltimore, along with many suburbs of Washington, D.C. But almost all began the year remotely, with some still hoping to hold classes in-person several weeks from now.

English to Portuguese: Cellular and molecular architecture of the intestinal stem cell niche General field: Science Detailed field: Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
Source text - English Abstract
Intestinal stem and progenitor cells replicate and differentiate in distinct compartments, influenced by Wnt, BMP, and other subepithelial cues. The cellular sources of these signals were long obscure because intestinal mesenchyme was insufficiently characterized. In this Review, we discuss how recent mRNA profiles of mouse and human intestinal submucosa, coupled with fine-resolution microscopy and gene and cell disruptions, reveal a coherent picture of an organized tissue carrying cells with distinct molecular properties and functions.

English to Portuguese: Trump Admits Downplaying the Virus Knowing It Was ‘Deadly Stuff’ General field: Science Detailed field: Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
Source text - English President Trump acknowledged to the journalist Bob Woodward that he knowingly played down the coronavirus earlier this year even though he was aware it was life-threatening and vastly more serious than the seasonal flu.
“This is deadly stuff,” Mr. Trump said on Feb. 7 in one of 18 interviews with Mr. Woodward for his coming book, “Rage.”
“You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed,” the president told Mr. Woodward in audio recordings made available on The Washington Post website. “And so that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flus.”

In the last collective bargaining audience, the ministers of SLC decided, for example, for the removal of relatives from company’s healthcare plan.
English to Portuguese: Is there life floating in the clouds of Venus? General field: Science Detailed field: Astronomy & Space
Source text - English It's an extraordinary possibility - the idea that living organisms are floating in the clouds of Planet Venus.
But this is what astronomers are now considering after detecting a gas in the atmosphere they can't explain.
That gas is phosphine - a molecule made up of one phosphorus atom and three hydrogen atoms.
On Earth, phosphine is associated with life, with microbes living in the guts of animals like penguins, or in oxygen-poor environments such as swamps.
For sure, you can make it industrially, but there are no factories on Venus; and there are certainly no penguins.
So why is this gas there, 50km up from the planet's surface? Prof Jane Greaves, from Cardiff University, UK and colleagues are asking just this question.
They've published a paper in the journal Nature Astronomy detailing their observations of phosphine at Venus, as well as the investigations they've made to try to show this molecule could have a natural, non-biological origin.
But for the moment, they're stumped - as they tell the BBC's Sky At Night programme, which has talked at length to the team.
English to Portuguese: Mass deaths of migratory birds reported in New Mexico General field: Science Detailed field: Zoology
Source text - English
Biologists in New Mexico have sounded the alarm after thousands of song birds were found dead in recent days.
New Mexico State University Professor Martha Desmond told local media that the reason for the mass die off is a mystery but could be tied to smoke from wildfires, or the recent cold weather.
The number of birds that have died may now be in the "millions", she said.
Scientists have reported North American bird populations have declined massively in recent years.
State biologists have asked people to report sightings of dead birds for further research to be conducted.
Some birds - including migratory warblers, swallows and bluebirds - were seen acting strangely before their deaths, according to witnesses.
"It's devastating. I don't think I've ever seen anything this horrible in my life," Prof Desmond, who works for the university's department of fish, wildlife, and conservation ecology, told KRQE-TV.
"When you're there, you know, picking them up off the ground and seeing the extent of it and then looking at all these carcasses come in," she continued.
Neighbouring south-west states such as Colorado, Arizona, and Texas have also reported increased numbers of bird deaths.
Smoke from wildfires is thought to have affected the birds lungs, or forced them to change migratory routes. Recent snows in Colorado could also be a culprit, Prof Desmond said, adding that more will not be known until the animals carcasses can be studied.
Meanwhile, the US Forest Service in the Santa Fe National Forest have appealed for public help. In a tweet on Friday, the agency wrote that "unexplained songbird mortality has wildlife biologists in NM very concerned," and asked people to collect data from birds that they find.
English to Portuguese: US election 2020: When will we get a result for the US election? General field: Other Detailed field: Government / Politics
Source text - English
Twenty years ago Americans woke up on an autumn morning after Election Day and did not know who would next lead the country.
It took 36 more days to resolve the contest between Al Gore and George W Bush as the country held its breath.
That prospect could happen again in 2020.
Why?
Well, the pandemic has many people fearful of voting in person because in the US that often means waiting for hours in a queue.
So millions more will vote by post and there are fears it could take days or weeks to count them all, leaving the outcome on a knife-edge.
What usually happens on a normal election night?
Different states stop voting at different times.
The first polls to close are on the East Coast, at about 19:00 local time (00:00 GMT), and after that you start getting a running total as votes in those states are counted.
Presidents are not picked by winning a national vote. No, instead it's a series of state-wide races with the winner in each state taking a certain number of what's called electoral college votes.
A state is "called" for a candidate when a media outlet believes one candidate has an insurmountable lead. It is a projection not a final result.
Similarly, when the whole election is "called" for a candidate, it is not the official result because there are still lots of votes to count.
An election is usually called on the night. And what follows is a choreographed response including a concession speech from the losing candidate. Perhaps not this year - more on that later.
In 2016 the election was called for Donald Trump at about 02:30 EST (07:30 GMT) after winning Wisconsin put him over the 270 threshold of electoral college votes.
In the days and weeks that followed, more and more Democratic votes were counted which meant Hillary Clinton stretched her lead in the nationwide popular vote but the electoral college was already lost.
An unprecedented volume of postal ballots
Standing in a queue at a polling station on Election Day is the most common way American voters cast ballots, but in recent years, voting by mail has risen in popularity.
Whereas it was previously not uncommon for states to restrict voting by post to special circumstances - such as being a soldier who was serving abroad - now the practice is widely permitted in a majority of states, whether one is an "absentee voter" or for any other reason.
In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has prompted an unprecedented number of requests from voters to cast ballots by post.
Some 80 million mail-in ballots are predicted to be cast - double the number in 2016 and more than any other election year.
The concern, then, is whether that volume of ballot deliveries will delay everything.
That fear is not just due to the large volume of ballots to count.
It is also due to the US Postal Service undergoing cutbacks at a time when it has a big responsibility.
First it has to post ballot papers out to people, and then it has to send them back again to election authorities, all before deadlines set by the states.
English to Portuguese: 'They used my picture and I should've got paid for it' General field: Other Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Source text - English Sean Heavey recognised his photo the moment he saw it on Stranger Things.
“God, that storm looks familiar,” he said, as he and his son watched the hit Netflix show.
When he watched a documentary about the making of the series, he became certain.
“They saved it off of Google, added a foreground to it and used it as a piece of concept art,” Mr Heavey says.
No-one else had photographed this supercell thunderstorm; no other cars drove down the road that day, to chase it across the Montana prairie.
He called the four panoramic shots he had stitched together The Mothership.
“I should have got credit and paid for it,” says Mr Heavey.
He tried to contact Netflix, but the company told him, “You can't copyright Mother Nature.” His case stalled.
Chasing storms is no hobby for Mr Heavey.
Getting that perfect shot costs him thousands of dollars in petrol every year. He braves “golf ball-sized hail”, winds raging over 100mph and rescues stranded people.
He complained on social media and his remarks were read by executives at Pixsy, a firm that helps photographers fight copyright infringement. They contacted Mr Heavey and, eager for the help, he agreed to work with them.
Pixsy appointed Mr Heavey a lawyer, David Deal, and together they found six more occasions where Netflix used The Mothership. Netflix settled the lawsuit in December 2018, according to records seen by the BBC.
The company did not respond to a request for comment.
In the UK, if convicted in a magistrates' court of copyright infringement you could face six months in jail or a fine of up to £50,000. Conviction in a Crown Court could carry a penalty of 10 years in jail and/or an unlimited fine.
In the United States, fines can reach $150,000 (£115,000) every time a picture is used the wrong way.
When a case is successful, firms like Pixsy collect 50% of the settlement or award at court.
“They all settle,” says Mr Deal, of copyright cases.
He says this is because the law is clear cut.
Translation - Portuguese ‘Eles usaram minha imagem e eu devia ter sido pago’
A Pixsy indicou ao senhor Heavey o advogado David Deal, e juntos eles descobriram seis outras ocasiões onde a Netflix utilizou a fotografia Nave-Mãe.
English to Portuguese: Switzerland gets ready to vote on ending free movement with EU General field: Other Detailed field: Government / Politics
Source text - English Swiss voters will decide on Sunday whether to abandon their free movement of people agreement with the EU.
Supporters say the move will allow Switzerland to control its borders and select only the immigrants it wants.
Opponents argue it will plunge a healthy economy into recession, and deprive hundreds of thousands of Swiss citizens of their freedom to live and work across Europe.
The justice minister says that would create a situation "worse than Brexit".
Why does non-EU member Switzerland need to bother with free movement?
Switzerland decided long ago not to join the EU, but it does want access to Europe's free-trade area, and it wants to co-operate with Brussels in areas like transport, the environment, and research and education.
The price for this is to sign up to the EU's major policy "pillars" including free movement, and Schengen open borders.
The EU has consistently told the Swiss there will be no cherry-picking: leaving free movement would mean leaving those lucrative trade arrangements too.
Why now?
The proposal comes from the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP), and is a successor to a referendum held in 2014 (also from the People's Party) to introduce quotas on immigrants from the EU.
That passed by a whisker (50.33% said yes, 49.67% said no), obliging the Swiss government to find a deal Brussels would accept. In the end a compromise was agreed: Swiss employers had to prioritise workers permanently resident in Switzerland, in job sectors where unemployment is already high.
The SVP dismissed the deal as so weak as to be virtually meaningless, and are now back with a second demand to get out of free movement altogether.
