บทคัดย่อ
การวิจัยนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาสถานการณ์ปัจจุบันเกี่ยวกับมุมมองความสำคัญภาษาอังกฤษในด้านต่าง ๆของผู้ปฏิบัติงานสายสนับสนุนในมหาวิทยาลัยในกำกับของรัฐ เพื่อเป็นการทำความเข้าใจสถานการณ์ และหาแนวทางการพัฒนาผู้ปฏิบัติงานในสถานศึกษาให้มีความพร้อมต่อสถานการณ์ที่กำลังจะมาถึง โดยได้จัดเก็บข้อมูลโดยใช้แบบสอบถามจากผู้ปฏิบัติงานสายสนับสนุนของคณะวิทยาศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล เพื่อเป็นพื้นฐานว่าผู้ปฏิบัติงานมีประสบการณ์กับภาษาอังกฤษและมีการใช้ภาษาอย่างไรบ้างในสถานการณ์ปัจจุบัน รวมถึงมีความชำนาญในการใช้ภาษาระดับไหน เพื่อเป็นพื้นฐานในการพัฒนาผู้ปฏิบัติงานต่อไป ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ผู้ปฏิบัติงานสายสนับสนุนในคณะวิทยาศาสตร์ร้อยละ 45.1 มองว่าตนเองมีการความชำนาญในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษไม่เพียงพอและ ร้อยละ 33.6 มองว่าตนเองมีทักษะภาษาเพียงพอกับสถานการณ์ในระยะสั้นเท่านั้น ซึ่งจำเป็นต้องพัฒนาอย่างเร่งด่วน นอกจากนี้ผู้ปฏิบัติงานยังมีโอกาสได้ใช้งานทักษะภาษาอังกฤษในด้านต่าง ๆ ไม่มากในการทำงานแต่ละวัน โดยเฉลี่ยแล้ว ผู้ปฏิบัติงานได้ใช้ทักษะการฟังและทักษะการอ่านตามโอกาส (1.67 และ 2.02 ตามล าดับ) โดยแทบจะไม่มีโอกาสได้ใช้ทักษะการพูดและทักษะการเขียน (1.43 และ 1.32 ตามลำดับ) รวมถึงผู้ปฏิบัติงานมีความต้องการพัฒนาทักษะด้านการฟังและการพูดอย่างมาก แตกต่างจากความต้องการพัฒนาทักษะด้านอื่น ๆ อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ และผู้ปฏิบัติงานมีความตระหนักในความสำคัญของภาษาอังกฤษในระดับปานกลาง เนื่องจากผู้ปฏิบัติงานกว่าร้อยละ 50 ได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมพัฒนาภาษาอังกฤษของหน่วยงาน และมีประวัติการทดสอบสอบภาษาอังกฤษ
ด้วยข้อสอบที่มีมาตรฐานระดับนานาชาติ จึงสามารถสรุปได้ว่า ผู้ปฏิบัติงานในสถานศึกษามีแนวโน้มที่จะตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของภาษาอังกฤษในสถานการณ์ที่ประเทศไทยก าลังก้าวเข้าสู่ประชาคมอาเซียน รวมถึงมีความต้องการและกระตือรือร้นที่จะพัฒนาทักษะภาษาอังกฤษเพื่อเตรียมพร้อมกับสถานการณ์ที่กำลังจะมาถึง ซึ่งเป็นสัญญาณที่ดี
ต่อการเตรียมพร้อมรับการเข้าสู่ประชาคมอาเซียน แม้ระดับภาษาอังกฤษโดยเฉลี่ยของผู้ปฏิบัติงานจะไม่ถึงระดับที่สามารถสื่อสารด้วยภาษาอังกฤษได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพก็ตาม | Translation - English
Abstract
This research was conducted to study the current situation about the view of support staff toward the importance of English language in a government-supervision university in order to understand the situation and develop a way to prepare the staff of the university for the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community. The data about the staff’s experience with English Language, frequency of usage, and the past record of their proficiency was collected from support staff of Faculty of Science, Mahidol University using a questionnaire as the instrument to serve as the basis for further staff development. The results reported that 45.1% of the support staff felt that they do not have enough proficiency and 33.6% felt that their current English skills are sufficient only in short-term situations, which must be improved as fast as possible. The results also found that the staff did not have many chances to use English language in their daily situations. On average, the staff have the chance to use their listening skills and reading skills on occasions (1.67 and 2.02, respectively) while almost have to chance to use their speaking skills and writing skills (1.43 and 1.32). The staff also demonstrated a strong need for development of listening and speaking skills at a significant level of difference from other skills. The result also found that the staff have the moderate level of awareness for the importance of the English language as over half of the questionnaire participants also participated in the English language development classes provided by the faculty and have taken the English tests which have international standard at least once. Therefore, we can assume that the staff of the faculty tend to be aware of the importance of English language in the situation where ASEAN Economic Community is coming and have the need as well as the urge to improve themselves to be ready when the time comes. |

เรามาถึงงานเลี้ยงเวลาหนึ่งทุ่มตรงพอดี ลูกชายของผมมีอาการตื่นกลัวอย่างเห็นได้ชัด ส่วนภรรยาของผมดูจะเร่งร้อนผิดปกติสักหน่อย ผมเข้าใจว่าเธอคง “หิว” มากกว่าอย่างอื่น เพราะงานเลี้ยงเช่นนี้เธอเคยผ่านมากับผมนับครั้งไม่ถ้วน ซึ่งไม่จำเป็นจะต้องตื่นเต้นอีกเลย
ภายในห้องโถงสว่างไสวด้วยไฟโคมระย้าย้อยห้อยอยู่กลางห้อง เสียงเปียโนคลออยู่เบาๆ ผู้คนค่อนข้างหนาตา เสียงพูดคุย เสียงน้ำแข็งกระทบแก้ว เสียงเครื่องดื่มรินไหล คละเคล้าหูอย่างไม่เป็นระเบียบ พรมหนานุ่มสีแดงเลือดคนรองรับรองเท้าที่เคลื่อนไหวไปมา
ผมมองหาเจ้าภาพแต่ไม่เห็น จึงพาลูกชายและภรรยาเดินเข้าไปทักทายผู้คนพอเป็นพิธี ก่อนขอตัวเดินจากไปยังโต๊ะของเรา ถ้าเป็นโอกาสอื่นผมคงต้องยืนดื่มพูดคุยกับคนอื่นๆสักเล็กน้อย เพื่อรอคอยพิธีเริ่มต้นของงาน
แต่วันนี้ ผมจำเป็นต้องแนะนำอะไรบางอย่างให้ลูกชายเข้าใจ ผมไม่อยากให้เกิดความผิดพลาดขึ้นก่อนถึงเวลานั้น คืนนี้จะเป็นการเริ่มต้นที่สำคัญของเขา มันจะบ่งชี้ว่าลูกชายของผมจะเป็นคนในระดับผมได้หรือไม่ หรือว่าเขาจะล้มเหลวกลายเป็นพวกมนุษย์ชั้นต่ำซึ่งผมและภรรยาไม่อยากให้ลูกเป็นเช่นนั้น
ดังนั้น ผมจึงต้องสร้างความรู้สึกที่ดีให้เขา เพื่อเขาจะได้เป็นบุคคลที่สมบูรณ์แบบในระดับเราสืบต่อไปในอนาคต
“ดื่มเสียหน่อยสิ” ผมส่งแก้วเครื่องดื่มให้ลูก ซึ่งหยิบจากถาดของคนรับใช้ในงาน
“ค่อยๆจิบนะ” เสียงภรรยาผมเตือนเบาๆ เธอคงเกรงว่าลูกชายจะมึนเมาก่อนถึงเวลาอันควร
เมื่อเรามาถึงโต๊ะที่เจ้าภาพจัดเตรียมไว้ คนรับใช้ประจำโต๊ะโค้งให้ แล้วเลื่อนเก้าอี้บุนวมให้นั่งทีละคน ท่าทีเขาดูสุภาพนุ่มนวล แต่แฝงไว้ด้วยความกลัว
ผมทรุดกายลงนั่งอย่างสบาย แล้วค่อยๆดึง “มีดประจำตัว” ออกจากปลอก วางลงบนที่วางมีดบนโต๊ะ ภรรยาผมเปิดกระเป๋าถือ หยิบ “มีดประจำตัว” ของเธอขึ้นมาดึงมีดออกปล่อยปลอกร่วงลงกระเป๋า เธอวางมีดเปลือยลงบนที่วางเบื้องหน้า มีดของเธอรูปร่างเรียวเล็กบอบบาง ด้ามงาสวยงาม เป็นธรรมดาของผู้หญิงที่ชอบของสวยของงาม แต่ความคมของมันไม่ผิดกับความสวยของงูที่ซ่อนพิษไว้
“เอามีดออกมาวางซิจ๊ะ” ภรรยาผมเตือนลูก
อาการตื่นประหม่ายังไม่เหือดไปจากเขา เขาค่อยๆดึงมีดขึ้นมามือสั่นเล็กน้อย ใบมีดสะท้อนไฟวูบเข้าตาผม แล้ววางลงบนที่รองรับอย่างเคอะเขิน
“มีดประจำตัว” ของเขาที่วางสงบคอยเหยื่ออยู่เบื้องหน้านั้น ผมเป็นคนพาเขาไปเลือกซื้อให้เอง หลังจากเขาได้รับอนุญาตให้มีมีดประจำตัวไว้ในครอบครองซึ่งน้อยคนนักจะได้รับโอกาสงดงามเช่นนี้ ถ้าเทียบกับจำนวนพลเมืองทั้งหมดที่มีอยู่ในเมืองของเรา เราเป็นกลุ่มคนเพียงหยิบมือเดียวที่มีสิทธิ์มีมีดประจำตัว ที่เหลือนอกนั้นเป็นมนุษย์ชั้นต่ำ
“ตรวจดูให้เรียบร้อย ลูกจะต้องใช้มันได้ทุกเมื่อไม่ว่าจะอยู่ที่ไหน ไม่ว่าจะหิวหรือไม่ก็ตาม จำไว้ว่ามีดของลูกจะต้องตื่นอยู่เสมอ” ผมจดจำคำของพ่อมาตลอดและถึงวันนี้ผมกำลังถ่ายทอดให้ลูกชายฟัง
“จำเอาไว้ มีดต้องคมอยู่ตลอดเวลาพร้อมที่จะจ้วงเฉือนได้ทุกเมื่อ”
“ผม ผมไม่กล้าทำครับ”
“พูดอะไรอย่างนั้นเล่าลูกเอ๋ย แม่เป็นผู้หญิงแท้ แม่ยังไม่เคยนึกกลัว”
“ครั้งแรกพ่อก็เคยพูดแบบนี้แหละ ... เอาไอ้นี่อีกสองแก้ว” ผมชูแก้วขึ้นโดยมิได้หันไปมองคนรับใช้ประจำโต๊ะ ผมรุ้ว่าเขาต้องพร้อมที่จะรับคำสั่งอยู่ตลอดเวลา เขาเป็นไอ้คนประเภทที่ไม่มีสิทธิ์มีมีดประจำตัว เขารู้ดีว่าจะต้องไม่ทำให้คนอย่างผมโกรธ | Translation - English
We arrived at the party at 7 sharp in the evening. My son was clearly anxious. My wife, on the other hand, appeared to be in a bit of a rush. I took it that she must have been “hungry” since she had accompanied me to similar parties before, and there is no other explanation for her behavior.
There were quite a lot of people at the party held in a large hall. Illuminated by the large crystal chandelier and accompanied by the gentle piano music befitting the atmosphere, other sounds common at a party can also be heard. The sound of ice cubes rolling into the glass, beverages pouring down, and the stepping sounds of people walking over the luxurious blood-red carpet.
I tried to locate the host of the party but couldn’t find him, so I took my son and my wife to greet other participants before excusing ourselves to our table. I would have stood and socialized a bit more until the party officially started, but not today.
I have to properly instruct my son on a specific matter. Until then, we cannot allow any mistakes. Tonight marks an important beginning that will decide, whether he will be someone of my level or a lower class failure like many others.
I need to ensure that he got a good impression, so he can be as perfect-leveled as we do.
“Here, have a drink.” I handed my son the drink I took from the waiter’s tray.
“Just a sip.” My wife warned with a small voice. She probably feared that our son might be drunk before ‘that time’.
We arrived at the table that the host had prepared. The waiter bowed before moving the cushioned chair one by one to accommodate us. He appeared polite and courteous, but he is afraid.
I comfortably let my body sink into the chair before slowly removing my “personal knife” from the sheath and placing it on the holder on the table. My wife also took out her “personal knife”. The knifeless sheath fell back into her purse as the blade was placed on the holder in front of her. A small, slender knife with an ornate ivory hilt is typical for a woman who loves beautiful things, but its sharpness is comparable to a snake that hid its venom.
“You should also put your knife on the table.” My wife reminded our anxious son.
His sign of anxiety had not yet subsided. He meekly took out his knife, the trembling blade reflected the light as it was placed on its holder.
His “personal knife” awaits its prey on the table. I personally took him to buy it after he received his knife-carrying approval. Not many are blessed with this opportunity. Merely a handful of people are allowed to carry the knife, and those who are not are of the lower class.
“Recheck your knife. You must be able to use it whenever you need it. Hungry or not, remember that your knife must always be awake.” I recited my father’s words which I remembered well to this day.
“A knife must always be sharp and ready to slice the prey.“
“I… I can’t…”
“Why would you say that? I’m a girl and I can do it just fine”
“I said that in my first time too… Bring me two more of these.” I held up the glass without looking at the waiter. I knew that they must stand ready for any command. They are the knife-less folk, and they knew they must not anger people like me. |
