French to English: Conference paper on sports sponsorship Detailed field: Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Source text - French SPONSORSHIP
NOTION
La tradition “goes back to Ancient Greece, where wealthy Athenians would contribute financially to expenses related to culture, defence, the state and sports, in order to make them more accessible to all citizens. In return, the state honoured them by engraving their name on marble tablets. This tribute was a mark of respect, value and high appreciation” (The official website of Athens 2004).
Translation - English SPONSORSHIP
1.THE CONCEPT
As the organisers of the Athens Olympics reminded us, sports sponsorship far predates the modern industrial age, and has its roots in ancient times. It is, in fact, a tradition that “goes back to Ancient Greece, where wealthy Athenians would contribute financially to expenses related to culture, defence, the state and sports, in order to make them more accessible to all citizens. In return, the state honoured them by engraving their name on marble tablets. This tribute was a mark of respect, value and high appreciation.” (The official website of Athens 2004).
In its modern guise, sports sponsorship is a marketing tool which is used to increase brand awareness, strengthen corporate image, modify consumer attitudes and communicate with existing and potential customers. The term ‘event marketing’, which is sometimes used as a synonym of sports sponsorship, in fact refers to an activity which is much narrower in scope.

Source text - English As is customary, Arsenal Football Club would like to warmly welcome to London, the players, officials and supporters of Bayern Munich. The inclement weather that greeted us on our arrival in Munich two weeks ago certainly did not dampen the excellent reception we received from the German club’s directors that evening.
Tonight will see the team attempt to overturn a 3-1 deficit. It is not an impossible task and I fully believe that this team is capable of fulfilling the wishes of every Arsenal supporter by qualifying for the next stage.
Looking back at this season’s group games, I recall that the team were written off after only a few matches, yet we came back to top the group as one of only three undefeated teams in the competition. And in my time at this football club I have always been full of admiration for Arsenal teams desire to give nothing less than 100%.
This evening, we require a victory of at least two goals without reply to secure passage into the quarter-finals. This is not beyond the team and I believe that the scoreline we require is achievable.
The Club have recorded some remarkable results in the Champions League in recent seasons, and hopefully tonight will see another one added to the list.
Bayern Munich are a great side, one of the continent’s best in fact. They are a club with a proud tradition, like Arsenal, and tonight’s game will showcase some of Europe’s most exciting footballing talents.
Finally, I understand that Bayern Munich are also scheduled to move to a new stadium ahead of Germany’s staging of the World Cup in 2006. I wish them luck in their move and hope that they enjoy their time playing at Highbury this evening. Lest we meet again next season, it could be their last visit here.

Translation - German In guter britischer Fußballtradition heißt der Arsenal Football Club die Spieler, Offiziellen und Fans des FC Bayern München herzlich in London willkommen.

I am a qualified translator (Institute of Linguists), working since 1992. I offer high quality and affordable translations from Russian and French into English, and a large number of other language combinations via my agency Libero Language Lab.My main focus these days is football (soccer), which I also cover as a journalist, and which is Libero's area of expertise. However, I also have extensive experience in business, politics and human rights and still occasionally take on projects in these fields.I offer a service that combines reasonable pricing and efficiency with the accuracy and fluency that can only be achieved by an experienced native speaker translator. Moreover, since I am a professional journalist as well as a translator, I can offer that extra little bit of polish and style that is so often lacking in translated texts.
Clients, past and present, include: the BBC World Service, The London School of Economics, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesboro football clubs, the Football Association of Ireland, Hamlyn Publishers, FourFourTwo Magazine, FIFA, The Guardian, The UK Foreign Office, The British Council, Marconi, Scottish Enterprise, The University of Birmingham, W.S. I graduated from Edinburgh University in 1992 with an MA (Hons) in Russian: First Class with Distinction. This included a year studying at Moscow Linguistics University and working as a translator/sub-editor at Interfax News Agency.
I subsequently obtained a professional diploma in translation from the UK's Institute of Linguists (1 distinction, 2 merits).
In addition to many long- and short-term interpreting and translation assignments for both French and Russian over the last 10 years, I have also undertaken a variety of other jobs, including:
1993-94 Lexicographer for Harper Collins on a new Russian-English Dictionary.
1995-96 Operations Manager for an international aid agency in Azerbaijan.
1996-99 Editor of the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce Bulletin - a monthly magazine on business in Russia.

I have also undertaken research work on Russia for Amnesty International and Medecins Sans Frontieres.
Away from translation, interpreting and journalism, I have worked in a variety of different fields that have broadened my professional, and life experience, including international aid work - in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Afghanistan - and adventure travel guiding for a company called Across the Divide Ltd. This work has taken me to countries on five continents: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, China, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Australia, Russia, Namibia and Morocco.
