Source text - English INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE
You are being asked to take part in this study because a scorpion stung you and you are sick from the sting. The study physician or a member of his/her study staff will discuss the requirements for participation in this study with you. If you are allergic to horse serum, you may not participate in the study.
This is a scorpion antivenom research study. Research studies include only patients who choose to take part. Please take your time to make your decision. Discuss it with your friends and family.
WHY IS THIS STUDY BEING DONE?
The purpose of this study is to see if a scorpion antivenom called Anascorp works to treat scorpion sting. Anascorp has been used in Mexico for many years, but is not approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Currently there is no FDA approved therapy for the treatment of scorpion stings. Scorpion stings can cause people to lose control of all of their muscles. Badly poisoned people may jerk their arms and legs, but they are not having a seizure. They may also sweat and drool a lot, and have a hard time breathing for up to 24 hours after the sting. You can choose to participate or not to participate. If you choose not to participate, it will not cause bad feelings or change the medical care that you would normally receive.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL TAKE PART IN THIS STUDY?
About 30 people will be enrolled in the study at this site. Overall, a total of 100-200 people will be enrolled over the next year at multiple study centers in Arizona.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THIS STUDY?
Before you are treated you will be asked questions about the scorpion sting and about your medical history. A brief physical exam will be performed and your blood pressure, temperature and pulse will be checked. You will receive Anascorp antivenom as a treatment for your scorpion sting. This will be given through a needle placed in a vein in your arm and it will take about 10 minutes to go into your vein. If the scorpion sting has made you too jumpy, you will get medicine just as if you were not in the study. Thirty minutes after you get the study antivenom, the doctor will do the physical exam again. If you are better, you will stay in the hospital for 30 minutes more so that the doctor can check to make sure no problems arise. If you are still not better you may receive another dose of antivenom every 30 minutes, for 2 more doses. When you have had no symptoms for 30 minutes, you may go home.

¿POR QUÉ SE LLEVA A CABO ESTE ESTUDIO?
La finalidad de este estudio es determinar si un antídoto para picaduras de escorpión llamado Anascorp es eficaz para tratar estas picaduras. Anascorp es un fármaco que se ha estado utilizando en México durante muchos años, pero no ha sido aprobado por la Administración de Drogas y Alimentos (Food and Drug Administration, FDA). En la actualidad, no existe ninguna terapia aprobada por la FDA para el tratamiento de picaduras de escorpión. Las picaduras de escorpión pueden provocar que las personas pierdan la capacidad de controlar todos sus músculos. Las personas gravemente afectadas por el veneno pueden sacudir sus brazos y piernas, pero no tienen convulsiones. Es posible que suden, babeen mucho y que tengan dificultades para respirar, hasta 24 horas después de haber sido picados. Usted puede elegir participar o no. Si elige no participar, no causará resentimientos ni habrá cambios en la atención médica que recibe normalmente.
¿CUÁNTAS PERSONAS PARTICIPARÁN EN ESTE ESTUDIO?
En este centro, aproximadamente 30 personas se inscribirán en el estudio. En términos generales, se inscribirá un total de entre 100 y 200 personas a lo largo del próximo año, en varios centros de estudio de Arizona.
¿QUÉ CONLLEVA ESTE ESTUDIO?

Si aún así no se siente mejor, es posible que reciba otra dosis del antídoto cada 30 minutos, para 2 dosis más. Cuando ya no tenga síntomas durante 30 minutos, podrá irse a casa.
