First off, don’t be misled by my location. I am an American with roots going back to 1733 and I never even left the US until age 17 except for a few day trips south of the border. My present location in Bethlehem is the result of fate and pure good luck.
I lived, studied, and worked in Germany for 15 years before coming to Bethlehem with my husband, a specialist in internal medicine, trained in Germany (my good luck). I taught German at a local school for 15 years, while at the same time translating for the health care organization my husband was working with. At some point, I was contacted by an agency to translate from German to English (Internet made it possible) and was pleasantly surprised to find most of the jobs were medical reports. Although I do not have any formal training in medicine, cooperation with my husband, coupled with excellent research and writing skills and general familiarity with medical topics led to my specialization in medical translation.
I have translated in many areas aside from medicine, among them fashion, travel & tourism, education, and social sciences. For all translations, some basic rules apply. It is absolutely necessary to understand all nuances of the source language, to convey them faithfully in the target language, yet have the result be smooth and natural.
Although I live in a third world country, I do not charge third world rates. However, I think you will find my rates very competitive for my language pair and specialization, especially considering that the market is not exactly flooded with good translators from German who are native English speakers.
