Source text - Chinese 2020年4月1日,法務部批准死刑犯翁人賢伏法,隨即引來歐盟及國際人權組織呼籲身為民主國家的台灣應當廢除死刑,使得死刑廢除與否的爭辯又再次浮上檯面。關於是否廢除死刑的爭辯,已在台灣社會已議論多年,不管是政府官員意見或民意,贊成與反對的聲浪絲毫沒有退讓的空間。贊成廢死的一方認為人權凌駕於一切之上,殺人償命的方式並沒有辦法達到嚇阻犯罪的功效,甚至可能產生冤獄。而另一方面,支持死刑者則認為必須要嚴刑峻法,不應容忍隨意剝奪他人生命、視人命如草芥的罪犯。
Translation - English On April 1, 2020, the Ministry of Justice approved the execution of death row prisoner Weng Renxian. This immediately led to calls from the European Union and international human rights organizations on Taiwan, a democratic country, to end the death penalty, surfacing again the debate around capital punishment. This debate has been ongoing in Taiwan for many years, and there is no room for compromise from either those pro- or con-camps, regardless of the opinion of government officials or the general public. The pro-abolitionists believe that human rights override everything else and that paying with life for killing another is not an effective deterrent to crime and may even result in wrongful punishment. On the other hand, those who support the death penalty believe that the severe punishment and enforcement of the law must be imposed and that senseless criminals who arbitrarily deprive others of their lives should not be tolerated.
