Source text - English The great American actor and baritone Paul Robeson was often incongruously cast in British movies of the ‘30s and ‘40s and too many of his films strained credibility to breaking point. It’s easy to see, in retrospect, why he so admired Proud Valley, an early Ealing studios feature set in a south Wales mining community.
Director Pen Tennyson, great grandson of the poet, treated him with dignity, and the film had the courage to address issues of poverty and racism, even if its politics and the movie’s denouement were fudged to accommodate the needs of the nation in wartime and Ealing producer Michael Balcon’s desire not to rock the boat to glamorise miners at the expense of employers.
Translation - Welsh Yn aml iawn, byddai'r actor a’r bariton Americanaidd o fri, Paul Robeson yn cael ei gastio’n anghyson mewn ffilmiau Prydeinig yn ystod y ’30au a’r ’40au, gyda gormod ohonynt yn ymestyn credadwyaeth i’r eithaf. Mae’n hawdd deall, o edrych yn ôl, pam ei fod mor llawn edmygedd o Proud Valley, ffilm gan stiwdios Ealing a leolwyd mewn cymuned lofaol Gymreig.
Cafodd ei drin ag urddas gan y cyfarwyddwr Pen Tennyson, gor-ŵyr y bardd, ac roedd y ffilm yn ddigon dewr i ddelio â materion megis tlodi a hiliaeth, hyd yn oed os yw gwleidyddiaeth a diweddglo’r ffilm wedi eu drysu er mwyn caniatáu ar gyfer anghenion cenedl mewn cyfnod o ryfel ac awydd cynhyrchwr Ealing, Michael Balcon, i beidio glamoreiddio glowyr ar draul y cyflogwyr.
