Abstract: Second trimester abortion has been legal in the Netherlands since 1984. Factors influencing second trimester abortion in the Netherlands may be different from those that play a role in first trimester abortions. This is important for professionals in counselling and education. In this paper national registration data are used to complement data from a small, qualitative, exploratory file study conducted in three clinics, on the factors associated with second trimester abortions. In 2006, 6.6% of all abortions registered in the National Abortion Registry took place after 12 weeks of gestation. In the qualitative data, relationship problems with the partner were
mentioned more frequently as the main reason for second trimester abortions than for first trimester abortions. Factors associated with delay in obtaining an abortion were young age, inability to recognise pregnancy, ambivalence towards the pregnancy, having to travel to the Netherlands for abortion and to a lesser extent being an immigrant from specific countries. Information should be provided for young women and women from specific immigrant groups on early awareness of pregnancy, contraception and reduction of fear about seeking abortion and sexuality education should be provided. Second Trimester Abortions in India

Abstract: This article gives an overview of what is known about second trimester abortions in India, including the reasons why women seek abortions in the second trimester, the influence of abortion law and policy, surgical and medical methods used, both safe and unsafe, availability of services, requirements for second trimester service delivery, and barriers women experience in accessing second trimester services. Based on personal experiences and personal communications from other doctors since 1993, when I began working as an abortion provider, the practical realities of second trimester abortion and case histories of women seeking second trimester abortion are also described. Recommendations include expanding the cadre of service providers to non-allopathic clinicians and trained nurses, introducing second trimester medical abortion into the public health system, replacing ethacridine lactate with mifepristone-misoprostol, values clarification among providers to challenge stigma and poor treatment of women seeking second trimester abortion, and raising awareness that abortion is legal in the second trimester and is mostly not requested for reasons of sex selection.

que influencian los abortos durante el segundo trimestre en Holanda podrían ser diferentes de aquellos que juegan
un rol en los abortos del primer trimestre. Esto es importante para los profesionales en la consejería y la educación. En este artículo se utilizan datos de registro nacional para complementar los datos de un estudio pequeño, cualitativo de exploración de archivos conducido en tres clínicas, sobre los factores asociados a los abortos de segundo trimestre. En 2006, 6,6% de todos los abortos registrados en el Registro Nacional de Abortos se llevaron a cabo luego de las 12 semanas de gestación. En los datos cualitativos, los problemas de relación con la pareja fueron mencionados más frecuentemente como la causa principal de los abortos del segundo trimestre que como causa de los abortos durante el primer trimestre. Los factores asociados con la demora en la obtención del aborto fueron corta edad, incapacidad de reconocer el embarazo, ambivalencia hacia el embarazo, tener que viajar a Holanda para practicarse el aborto, y en menor medida ser una inmigrante de países específicos. Debería proveerse información a las mujeres jóvenes y mujeres de grupos inmigratorios específicos sobre la detección temprana del embarazo, anticoncepción y disminución del temor a buscar un aborto, y debería proveerse educación sexual. Abstract: Este artículo presenta un panorama sobre lo que se sabe de los abortos durante el segundo trimestre en India, incluyendo las razones por las cuales las mujeres buscan abortos durante el segundo trimestre, la influencia de las leyes y políticas sobre aborto, métodos quirúrgicos y médicos utilizados, tanto seguros como inseguros, disponibilidad de servicios, requerimientos de nacimientos asistidos en el segundo trimestre, y las barreras que experimentan las mujeres cuando buscan acceder a este tipo de servicio en el segundo trimestre. Basado en experiencias personales y en comunicaciones personales de otros médicos desde 1993, cuando comencé a trabajar como proveedor de abortos, se describen las realidades prácticas de los abortos durante el segundo trimestre e historias de casos de mujeres que buscan abortos durante el segundo trimestre. Las recomendaciones incluyen expandir la opción de proveedores del servicio a clínicos no alopáticos y enfermeras capacitadas, introducir el aborto médico en el segundo trimestre en el sistema de salud pública, reemplazar el lactato de etacridina por mifepristone-misoprostol, clarificación de valores entre los proveedores para desafiar el estigma y el mal trato a las mujeres que buscan un aborto en el segundo trimestre y concientizar que el aborto es legal en el segundo trimestre y generalmente no requerido por razones de selección de sexo.
