Source text - English Also referred to simply as 'toko', the tokonoma is a kind of an alcove, or a niche in the wall, that began to be built into the reception rooms and tea-rooms of woden houses of Japan about the 14th century. Hanging picture scrolls, antique items, vases with flowers of the season and a few ornamental elements were placed there. It is also in the tokonoma that 'kagami-mochi'(a pagoda-like pile of rice cakes), 'hina-ningyo' (girl-dolls), 'musha-ningyo' (warrior-dolls), etc. have traditionally been displayed on such annual festive occasions as New Year's Day, Girl's Festival (March 3), Boy's Festival (May 5), etc respectively.

The Glycemic Index (GI) is a measure of how different foods affect your blood glucose levels.
