Bio
I am a skilled and creative translator with a passion for literature and language.
Based in London, I was previously a consultant and translator for an independent political and economic intelligence consultancy, specialising in European affairs and lobbying. Having joined the company in 2008, my responsibilities included researching, writing and translating documents - newspaper articles, marketing materials, high-level political and corporate interviews and reports - between French and English and occasionally Italian on a wide variety of topics, including defence, finance, European affairs and lobbying. I am also currently working on the draft French>English translation of a French novel - in my spare time - with a view to getting this book published in the UK.
The years I have previously spent living in France and in Italy, studying languages and translation at university and working with the written word have prepared me well for a career in translation.
I moved to Paris in autumn 1998 where I worked for 18 months, initially as an au pair to two young French boys and thereafter in the hospitality sector. I then spent a number of months working in Rome overseeing a B&B before beginning my Bachelor's degree in French and Italian at University College London in 2000. During my degree, I spent a further year in Paris studying at the British Institute and working in retail, plus 6 more months in Rome studying the history of Italian media at Roma III University.
I completed my first translation project for the French/American aeronautical company Labinal (French to English translation of technical/engineering documents) while travelling in Seattle in the summer of 2001. This involved translating Excel spreadsheets on aircraft orders and statistics. On returning to Paris in 2002, I became responsible for the ongoing French>English translation of commercial correspondence for an import-export professional at Olympiades Duty Free.
After graduating in French and Italian from UCL in 2004 and while working full-time for a well-known property and finance entrepreneur in London, I took on various freelance translation projects. These projects included French>English translation of academic medical documents and English>French translation of a wedding script, including vows and poetry.
In autumn 2007 I graduated from the School of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia with a Master's degree in Literary Translation. During my time at the UEA, I produced a number of in-depth studies comparing source texts (both French and Italian) to their existing translations, and I was awarded a first-class distinction for my dissertation, a French>English translation/commentary on the work of a Francophone Cameroon writer.
Both during and after my Master's course, and before taking on my current role, I worked for Lloyds TSB Products & Markets, researching, re-writing and re-developing whole sections of the company intranet site - including pages encouraging professional development and promoting the role of the many different teams - for the Finance department, which resulted in a c.80% improvement in training uptake within the space of a few months.
In addition to the projects listed above, I have excellent translation experience in the fields of finance, defence and European affairs through my latest role at ESL and I pride myself on my ability to turn specialist language into accessible text. Owing to my literary education, I am also very interested in translations from the creative industries or in creative field such as marketing/advertising etc, as well as projects emanating from the educational, academic and public sectors.
