1933 am 31. Januar 4 Uhr früh wurde mein Vater, Funktionär der Sozialdemokratischen Partei Deutschlands, aus dem Bett heraus verhaftet. Ich wachte auf, der Himmel vor dem Fenster schwarz, Lärm von Stimmen und Schritten. Nebenan wurden Bücher auf den Boden geworfen. Ich hörte die Stimme meines Vaters, heller als die fremden Stimmen. Ich stieg aus dem Bett und ging zur Tür. Durch den Türspalt sah ich, wie ein Mann meinem Vater ins Gesicht schlug. Frierend, die Decke bis zum Kinn hochgezogen, lag ich im Bett, als die Tür zu meinem Zimmer aufging. In der Tür stand mein Vater, hinter ihm die Fremden, groß, in braunen Uniformen. Sie waren zu dritt. Einer hielt mit der Hand die Tür auf. Mein Vater hatte das Licht im Rücken, ich konnte sein Gesicht nicht sehn. Ich hörte ihn leise meinen Namen rufen. Ich antwortete nicht und lag ganz still. Dann sagte mein Vater: Er schläft. Die Tür wurde geschlossen. Ich hörte, wie sie ihn wegführten, dann den kurzen Schritt meiner Mutter, die allein zurückkam. Em 31 de janeiro de 1933, às 4 da manhã, meu pai, funcionário do Partido Social Democrata da Alemanha (SPD), foi arrancado da cama e preso. Eu acordei, o céu atrás da janela era negro. Ruído de vozes e passos. Ali ao lado livros eram atirados no chão. Eu ouvia a voz do meu pai, mais clara que as vozes estranhas. Saí da cama e fui até a porta. Pela fresta vi um homem batendo na cara do meu pai. Sentindo frio, o cobertor puxado até o queixo, eu jazia na cama quando a porta do meu quarto se abriu. Na porta estava meu pai, atrás dele os estranhos, grandes, em uniformes marrons. Eram três. Um deles segurava a porta com a mão. Meu pai tinha a luz às costas, eu não podia ver seu rosto. Escutei-o chamar meu nome baixinho. Não respondi e fiquei deitado bem quieto. Então meu pai disse: ele está dormindo. A porta foi fechada. Ouvi que o levavam embora, então os passos curtos de minha mãe, que voltava sozinha. (...)
