I am one of those who feel that the TMs don't help me as much as one should expect after numerous projects. So I am wondering how you people are arranging your TMs.
Me, as an example, has created one TM for IT-related texts, one for electronics and so on, and of course one of each in every language combination that I work with.
Would it be wiser to have just one TM for each language combination, regardless of the term I am working with, or would the TM eventually be to ... I think that it would take many, many years before such TM would become too big to be used on my computer and by that time computers are going to be much faster. many programs allow now to use simultaneously several TMs. It may be a good idea too - have a few TMs one for each area, use them at the same time but update only the one related to translated text.
Otherwise you loose benefit of concordance searches. Even if whole translating IT text you don't expect to get a 100% match fr... I would also create a separate TM if I knew that the client is likely to need one. I would run it in parallel with my master TM and in this case update both. Otherwise - if I knew that client uses very specific terminology I would create separate TM for that client, run it simultaneously with my master TM but update only "client's" TM - so that I don't touch my "standard" terminology in the main TM.
To make the long story short - my idea is to maximize the return on my work. Whenever I encounter new terminology I do a careful research and I don't mind spending a lot of time on it. But I do mind doing it over and over again for the same terms, so practically every time I translate something I expect to be able to use it in the future and benefit from the past research.

I have several kinds of TMs.
One for mechanic texts, another for auto, electrics, business etc.
Sometimes I am asked to create a new TM and send it to the employer.
I prefer to use the TMs, which are not heavy, for better working.
But I have two master TMs (mechs and auto).
After I have done a job, I export my working TM in txt. And than import by mechs or auto.

Hi,
I think that one Master TM will help more, and now with the new CAT tools like Studio it is applicable to add separate new TM for a single project.
Translator then have the choice to update his Master TM, his new single one, or both of them.
However, I would prefer creating separate TM for a single Long Term or very large project that has special and some technical terms.

I usually arrange my TMs by client - that way, it's easy if they send me a file that in some way relates to previous translations that I've done for them.
I also have two large TMs in my specialist areas, which I use as a reference, when I need them (not often). And I also create TMs for specific large projects which have specific jargon, which get retired after the project is over (eg. a specific computer game).
