Is it possible in Studio 2009 to run an analysis that exclude those segments that should not be translated?

I might get 20-30 files to be translated in Studio, and all of them will have a reference section (sometimes quite a few references containing a lot of words) which must stay in the source language.

I know I can lock the segments once the Studio project has been created, but I want to completely exclude these segments from the analysis in order to make a precise quotation for price and turnaround time. Is that possible?

I already tried searching the Help in Studio, but was unable to find any reference to this issue.

Thx in advance for any help!

What is the source file format? May 3, 2012

Hi,

This is something best done before you do the analysis. So for example, if the format is a word file then you can hide the text in word and then it will be excluded from the translation. This may not be possible with all file formats, but if we know what the format is there may be a way.

As an afterthought... what you could do, and this would work for any file format at all, is to .lock the segments in Studio and then use the SDLXLIFF to Legacy Converter to convert

As an afterthought... what you could do, and this would work for any file format at all, is to .lock the segments in Studio and then use the SDLXLIFF to Legacy Converter to convert to TTX, but before you do this check the box to exclude locked segments in the settings on the Converter application.

Then analyse the TTX in Studio. I don't know how good a job this would do so would be interested to know if anyone has tried this already? In principle it seems like it may be a neat workaround.

Thanks, Paul, for your reply; I will definitely try it, but having to do so with 20-30 files would make it time-consuming, wouldn't it? I'm not sure that the additional time to use this work-around would justify the higher precision in the time and price calculation.

I wish SDL would invent the option for us users to select only those portions of the source text that we want to (analyze and quote for and subsequently ) translate.

How hard can it be? May 3, 2012

Hi Peter,

I attended a talk in Krakow a few weeks ago and Bob Donaldson from the Carson Strategy Group gave us a neat quote on the five most frightening words in the English language... "How hard can it be"

I don't think it will take you much longer really. You still have to go through each file in your Project to tell Studio which segments you don't wish to be included, and this will be the most time consuming part I think. After that, you do this:

1. Convert all 20-30 files at once (this is possible with the converter)
2. Drag all the files into a project you set up just for analysing

So not too much work really.

Regards

Paul

Assuming I have all files available upfront ... May 3, 2012

thx, Paul. Maybe it turns out to be not hard at all, but ... the thing is that I probably won't get all files at once meaning some processes will have to be repeated for each new batch of files.

I'm probably not the only who's looking forward to that new button in the Reports view "Do not include locked segments in the analysis" ...

I just wanted to note that I used the SDLXLIFF to Legacy Converter for this purpose and it worked for me, thank you!
