SDL Trados 2014 New bugs & shortcomings Thread poster: Daniel Grigoras
|
Hello,
I've just encountered a new bug. Here's how to reproduce it:
1. Open a project
2. Open a project file in the editor
3. Go to project view
4. Press the file tab
5. Now try to close Studio and you will be greeted with two error messages: "Failed to deactivate view 'Projects'" and then "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".
Another bug, already mentioned, is the one about being asked to configure languages each time one switches between Studio 2011 and Studio 2014.
Leaving aside these new bugs, here are some new shortcomings:
1. Dragging and dropping of packages is unsupported
2. Double-clicking on a project will open it by default in Studio 2011. I have tried to change file association by (a) right-clicking on a trados package, clicking "Open with...", (b) browsing to find the Studio 2014 executable, as only Studio 2011 was suggested, (c) selecting Studio 2014, (d) ticking "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file", (e) and then hitting open. Well, after undertaking all these steps, when I hit "Open" the package is still opened with Studio 2011.

I think I will wait with updating to 2014 for another year at least, of they haven't even managed to correct ancient bugs like "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".
.... I may give it a while myself - I recognise that bug too!

no upgrading for me for at least another 12 months...

The "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" message is not a single bug. It indicates an error of some description that the developers have not trapped. It can occur pretty well anywhere in the program when something happens that the developers did not expect. Ultimately, it has little meaning other than "****! Something has gone wrong."

If you use the "Exit" button under the File tab it doesn't show this error, but only when you use the "X" button on the top of the Window.
This problem doesn't cause much trouble at all. I expect this to be fixed in no time. Obviously there is now way SDL can test every possible odd scenario someone might do in a new software.
Yeah, you need to press the X button to be greeted by that error | Oct 3, 2013 |
What happens after you press the X button in that scenario depends on one's further actions. For instance in my case the ribbon stopped responding and I had to close Studio 2014 by right-clicking on its taskbar icon and than pressing Close Window. Another time Studio 2014 died. Another time I received only the first error message, without the second one.

I was nastily surprised by the fact that dragging and dropping of a trados package does not casue it to open in Studio 2014. I've read about the colossal new feature of simply dragging and dropping a file into Studio 2014 to open it for translation and expected that dragging and dropping of a trados package to get it open would also be supported. How were they able to overlook this?
Also, they should have got rid of Java. One of SDL's support persons admitted on another thread that dependency on Java is their biggest problem and that they will try to get rid of it. Well why haven't they already?
Do updates and Service Packs cost anything?

I tried following your steps with several projects/files and didn't get the error a single time, Studio closes as expected on my computer.

Maybe you've overlooked something from the magic formula I provided. I would be happy to assist you in reproducing this scenario via Team Viewer.

Object reference not set as an instance of the object | Oct 4, 2013 |
This shows during propagation of some segments (Never did before noticed today)
I have, say 3 segments of the same type.
- I translate the first and propagation works good.
- Second segment asks me to confirm again. Confirm and first segment shifts from translated to DRAFT (That's not normal either as i have to rerun checks on all those segments)
- Translate third segment and i am asked to confirm again. Confirm and the previous segments or one of them becomes DRA... See more This shows during propagation of some segments (Never did before noticed today)

All segments are perfect matches. Studio doesn't crash but the message won't go so i have to force close and restart (and i lose part of the translations i did, too).

When adding some word in the filter field (Review Ribbon) sometimes capitalization doesn't work.
For example: I try to insert "TV" (Capitalized) but i get "tV". This is consistent and won't change. However, if i insert any other letter filter will work properly. I have also tried to use caps lock and type T inside the field and it will still come up small instead of capitalized.
Repositioning after a filter search | Oct 4, 2013 |
After a filter search i don't seem to get back to the original line i had left from but rather at the beginning of the document. This forces me to remember the segment number to get back where i was. This also shows with during amendments to auto propagation issues. Stops on the last line amended and doesn't take me back to original line. Is this a bug or there is an option in inside Studio controlling this behaviour?

An issue in propagation | Oct 4, 2013 |
Where you propagate some segment like the one below and want to insert one space between number and measurement (25 kW instead of 25kW). Studio will force the removal of the space in the next segment
This sentence: 2 generatori XXX a bassa velocità da 25 kW a 50 Hz dotati di scarico sommerso silenziato e involucro insonorizzato
if propagated will be forced to become
2 generatori Kohler a bassa velocità da 25kW a 50Hz dotati di scarico sommerso silenziato ... (Please note the difference in spacing between numbers and measures). Then, if you try to amend the SECOND segment to make it the same as the first and confirm, then the FIRST segment will change automatically removing the spaces between number and measurement.
This is consistent. it happens with 10m, 100GB, 1TB etc. Although, there are technical rules in writing that require one space between those (although widely ignored), and some customers make a point about it. ▲ Collapse
