relativelly, I have seen some other CAT tools!
I've no favorite CAT tool!
P.S. A recent experience with XTM (at the request of a long-standing customer) only served to reaffirm my dislike: what was fed into the system had not been updated or was clearly wrong and I wasted more time (invoiced to the client) updating and correcting it, and justifying to the client why it was wrong, than I would have translating from scratch.

I have no CAT tools at all.
There should be an option "I do not use CAT tools". I like to see how many of us dinosaurs still exist.

The 2017 version is less crash-prone than its predecessors, but it does still crash. A lot of the problems seem to be related to Multiterm. | | | Please count me in! | Jun 3, 2018 |

No real issues for trados, but the fact that you have to pay for a service with Across now that was always available in the past is quite annoying.
But otherwise I am quite happy with both (@ Mike, even with Multiterm☺). | | | Anna Herbst Australia Local time: 09:36 English to Swedish + ... MODERATOR SITE LOCALIZER

I use Wordfast and honestly, I have no complaints, I love it. However, the only hassle of WF is that if I don't quit the segment, it doesn't save the translation. I mean, if I'm translating a segment and I wrongly close the page, WF doesn't save the translated segment so I've to rewrite it.
That's the only thing that could be fixed. For the rest, it's great!
My CAT is OmegaT and not only do I have no complaints, but I am delighted with the human support it provides. Unsurpassed! | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 23:36 Spanish to English + ...
The fact that I never seem to get round to using all its features.

I agree. What annoys ME most about CAT tools is the notion generally accepted here that they are essential for translation these days. IMAO, they are not.

I'm quite satisfied with WF or any other CAT, yet its rigid segmentation approach is the real pain in the back--the scourge of the God, whatever. | | | Other - I have NO favorite CAT tool | Jun 3, 2018 |
I have been using WordFast Classic for over a decade, since the days it was free. What annoys me most is that though its price has risen close to other CAT tools, its interface and user friendliness remains comparable to what is typically found in $19.99-shareware.

I think it is useful mostly by preserving - to some reasonable extent - text formatting in MS Word, which is obnoxiously cumbersome. As I began my computing life in the 1980s with an Apple II, I've used maybe two dozen different word processors. MS Word always was - and still is - the very worst among them. Nevertheless, deep-pocket-marketing clout turned it into the one-and-only market standard.
I have used client-provided portable licenses of MemoQ, Memsource, and Passolo. Fancier interfaces, however they all work about the same.
I tried WordFast Pro for a while, long ago, when it was bundled with Classic. I guess it expected my hardware to be several generations ahead of my then state-of-the-art computer, as it was too sluggish.
What amazes me in all CAT tools is that their developers invest much more in marketing than in programming quality. All I see is translators having trouble with CAT tools, in spite of their comparatively hefty price.
I wonder... if a company like Adobe developed and launched a CAT tool, would they quickly make all others wither and die in no time?
What I really dislike is that SDL's muscle marketing has led an overwhelming number of translation clients to demand Trados absolutely, just for the sake of asserting their power in demanding it. They demand it to give the time of day even when NO CAT tool will be of any use. That's possibly one of the major reasons why I decided that I'll never buy Trados. The other one is the quantity and severity of troubles Trados users face, as shown by most of the posts on the Proz forums being about them.
The typical incident was a translation agency's job post (AFAICR not on Proz) boldly stating "MUST have Traldus" (sic!), but failing to mention the language pair involved. That's what their priorities have come to. No idea on what's the kickback for translation agencies doing it. ▲ Collapse | | | Same here - I don't use CAT tools! | Jun 3, 2018 |
