For me construction noise is the worst! I live in a new building embedded amidst old townhouses and there's always an awful lot of construction going on there. Some of my neighbours in the next building seem to be always involved in some kind of noisy works that last for ever. Phone calls, hooting cars, loud talking or loud music don’t irritate me because they are usually a temporary thing. I live alone, so constant human traffic in my visual field is… zero! | | | Kevin Fulton United States Local time: 07:10 German to English Other – external noise | May 23, 2021 |
I live in a condominium community. For six months of the year, the maintenance crew mows the grass in the green areas on the grounds which also involves using noisy blowers to move the clippings from the sidewalks. Unless it is raining, this is usually done on Tuesdays in my part of the neighborhood and lasts much of the day. See more I live in a condominium community. Unless it is raining, this is usually done on Tuesdays in my part of the neighborhood and lasts much of the day. The crew also operates small vehicles ("mules") with inefficient mufflers that zoom past several times a day. Currently the roofs of some of the adjacent buildings are being replaced, so there is hammering from very early in the morning until past noon. Carpet cleaning services operate equipment out of a truck which for some reason causes sympathetic harmonic vibrations in my bathroom via the exhaust pipe. It's not terribly loud, but it is unnerving. Then there's the woman next door with a very active love life who moans very loudly and occasionally screams. Fortunately this goes on after my normal working hours and doesn't last very long in the evening. ▲ Collapse | | | Sadek_A Local time: 16:10 English to Arabic + ...

All of the options irritate me, but the one that irritates me the most is getting calls while I'm working. | | |
Almost nothing can distract me from my translation work, because I am so intense and focused on it when I am doing it. But because of that, I did get a bit annoyed once when a waitress disrupted my work to try to sell me a dessert, esp. since her tone wasn't all that congenial. When I am forced to work at home, I have, at the least, a whole lot of quiet, as I live at the end of a cul-de-sac in a community that's located in the country, more or less. Even though my landline rings a lot, it doesn't seem to derail my concentration all that much. And after all, a client may be trying to call me to ask for my services.

What irritates me most is stopping work on a project to answer polls about what irritates me most when I'm working on a project.
But then, I have a choice, of course, so it's largely deliberate self-irritation ... there are lessons to be learned here. | | | Tom in London United Kingdom Local time: 12:10 Member (2008) Italian to English

Worst of all was a client, who was calling me again and again and asking when he can get the translation... It was days before the deadline. I usually listen to music while working, it helps a lot | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 13:10 Spanish to English + ...
Especially if they turn out to be cold callers trying to sell me something. And they also tend to have a nasty habit of calling either when I'm trying to prepare my lunch, eat it, or have a siesta afterwards. Grrr!
The other situations don't really bother me, as I live in a semi-rural area, so at most I might hear tractors working nearby, or the occasional buzz of a chainsaw in pruning season. I quite enjoy hearing the occasional horse clip-clopping past, or the contented baahing of... See more Especially if they turn out to be cold callers trying to sell me something.
