Do you recommend that translators get ATA certified in 2024? What could be gained?

You could gain a lot of scammer emails starting with "Hi dear, I found you through ATA blah blah blah.."
But then they'll most likely not bother checking the ATA directory to see if you're listed there or not.
ATA is the magic word.. If you're not listed there you can delete those emails right away, which will save you time and hassle.
Btw why do you keep ending your questions with 'in 2024'? Do you have other plans in 2025?

Here are the three benefits of ATA certification:

Basically, you are slightly more visible in the ATA freelance directory, and you can tell potential clients that you have a certification, which might make them more likely to hire you. Other certified translators will also be able to recognize you (and send you work) if you write CT behind your name. | | | Ruqaiya Malik Oman Local time: 18:33 English to Arabic + ... TOPIC STARTER

I believe that a significant change in the translation sector has taken place in 2024, especially with the emergence and development of AI. As a result, I'm skeptical about whether these certificates will retain their value from now onwards. | |

I put this very question to ChatGPT (changing 2024 to 2025 and 2023 respectively), and the gist of what it said was more or less the same as Samuel's answer. Makes you wonder if dear Samuel here is using AI to write his posts or if he's the one that's behind the dark forces of OpenAI that's currently making life hell for our beloved colleagues.
Interestingly, though, when I changed the year to 2023, ChatGPT slowed almost to a crawl. It bent out of shape at times.. very interesting.

I have never joined ATA but there is another organization that I joined a few months ago. It is called Mediterranean Editors & Translators or MET. As the name implies, they target translators in Mediterranean countries like me. This one is not for certification though. They have webinars and other online activities free just for members. I actually enjoyed a few webinars that I attended so far. I guess it is more of a social activity than anything else. Joining MET costs 38.00 Euros annua... I enjoy some ATA member benefits that you can get whether you're certified or not, but when you're certified then you're marked as such in the directory. A lot of US universities or other bodies that recognize international qualifications (e.g. medical) require the applicants to submit a translation of their transcripts done by an ATA-certified translator. I get probably 5-10 requests for these kinds of jobs a year. Having said that, I in no way market this service because I don't really like do... If I did more marketing then I could probably build that up as another leg of my business. They're not my favorite, though, because they involve a little translation and a lot of formatting, plus the nature of the work means that the clients rarely come back with more work. Still, if you're looking to diversify a bit, then it's one possibility. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » ATA CERTIFICATION Anycount & Translation Office 3000 |
