The role of the lawyer-linguist in the language services industry has been hotly debated by both lawyer-linguists and other professional linguists. This panel will discuss various perspectives on how lawyer-linguists affect the translation and interpretation industries, with a particular focus on legal translation. The panel will also address their experiences with direct clients, agencies, and fellow linguists vis-a-vis this role.
Ms. Deliscar was called to the Ontario Bar in 2004. As principal of Suzanne E. Deliscar, Lawyer-Linguist, she focuses on matters involving both legal and language issues. Her practice was created through the combination of her language skills in French and Spanish and the practice of law in a variety of areas, including civil litigation, wills & estates, corporate/commercial, and family law.
Ms. Deliscar has extensive experience in the translation of a variety of legal documents. She has extensive experience in the translation of official documents, and has reviewed, analyzed and abstracted over 500 Spanish language contracts for a large multinational corporation. Ms. Deliscar is also experienced in providing document review in French.
Suzanne Deliscar is also the developer and presenter of over 13 popular translator training webinar programs in the areas of legal translation, official document translation, and marketing for translators and interpreters. She is also the founder of the Lawyer-Linguists Forum, an online community of lawyer-linguists which fosters discussion and exchange in an effort to improve awareness and growth of the profession.
Ms. Deliscar has been heavily involved in the community through her mission work in Haiti, as well as holding various positions locally, regionally, nationally and internationally within her church community. Ms. Deliscar has also hosted numerous “Ask the Lawyer” Days in banks and for community organizations.

Steve Kahaner is the Vice President and General Counsel of Marste & Co., Inc. and the Executive Director of Juriscribe®, a division of Marste & Co. that provides translation and related language services to law firms, corporate legal departments and financial institutions in the United States, Europe and Latin America. Mr. Kahaner is currently the Assistant Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Spain-US Chamber of Commerce, and the Chair of the Board’s SME Committee. He is also an active member of the Association of Corporate Counsel and the NYC Bar Association. He was previously a founding member, vice president and member of the board of The Association of Language Companies. A graduate of Tufts University, Mr. Kahaner received his law degree from the George Washington University Law School, and is licensed to practice in New York and Connecticut.
Sue Leschen is a lawyer – linguist, the Director of Avocate a niche market legal and commercial French language services company and also an independent trainer for language professionals in the areas of professional conduct, legal terminology. She is also a mentor for everything you need to know and do to set up and run a successful business.
