Vostro (at least the 1310 model) can still be ordered with Windows XP.
It is designed as business laptop.
When I ordered mine I bought it with Windows XP and am very happy with that. | | | Flora Yu China Local time: 04:54 Member (2008) Japanese to Chinese + ... TOPIC STARTER

I've inquired the sales Dept. here and also just back from checking 1310 in their shop.
13" doesn't feel so much difference from 14" as I thought.
If I can finally accept the screen, 1310 will be on my desk soon this month ;-O | | | Trados on a Mac | Jul 16, 2008 |

But SDL Trados does not officially support this combination as far I am informed.
Nevertheless, this combination should work.
SDL support (bad) what is supose to support. Has nothing to do where you "run" Windows.
It works, and XP start faster and better than in a PC, and I use Trados with Dragon NS, and hear music (instrumental) + all other applications like Mail or Firefox in the Mac at the same time!!
Mac is intuitiv.
Trados is not intuitiv.
For example:
You may consider take a look at Leopard and Word 2008.
And SDL may consider apply the same menus like Mac.

Hi! I'm really considering migrating to a Mac and I've been hesitant due to the fact that I don't know how bootcamp really works. Can you enlighten me? Thanks so much. Hello all,
I'm new in this forum.
Recently I wanna buy a new laptop coz my old one is too slow andthe performance is not stable.
I've watching on DELL Vostro 1310 for one week, is it a good choice?
-Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor T5670,-1.8GHz
-Internal Dell(TM) 84 Keys Keyboard
-13" WXGA 1280X800
-2GB(2x1024) 667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
-160GB 7200RPM SATA
-128MB NVIDIA(R)GeForce(R)8400M GS
Guess seldom translators use laptop to work that's why I'm so cautious to choose.
Any one who is professional at this Please give me some advises.
Thank you!
Hi Flora,
If you are wondering the specs you mentioned is adequate for translating work, it is. Not sure if it will run smoothly when you use Trados, because I'm using Wordfast. Doesn't take much processing power to run Wordfast.
I am using Dell Inspiron, 15" screen (heavy to carry, but love large screen), with T5750 processor. I have no problem with my laptop so far, but I'm running Windows XP. If your Vostro comes with Windows Vista (which I am sure it does), I would like to recommend you to downgrade it to XP for a more stable performance, and compatibility. You can get the sales service people to do that for you. And another item you really need is a number pad. Really comes in handy when you have pages of numbers to re-type
I'm not sure if the Chinese version of Windows will allow you to type Japanese, so that is something to check first before you buy. If your budget allows it, you may want to upgrade your memory to 4GB.
I have to agree that laptop is great when you need to work away from home. It helped me a lot when my internet connection at home was down or when the power was out, or when my nieces and nephews descended on me, and I need to get away from them to work! But, if you don't have that kind of problems, and work mainly from home, then why not get a desktop? Larger screen, better processor, better memory, keyboard that comes together with number pad, etc. Cheaper too.
I missed your reply, Thank you anyway!
Guess I'm going to add an external screen+keyboard, coz one of my friend said I need a printer for proofreading work, but it costs more, paper..inks..
For budget reason I may buy the standard configuration of VO 1310
T5750, integrated graphics card, 2G memory, 4 cells battery....
Is it worth? Does 4 cell battery and integrated graphics card reduce the performance?
Still confusing...and the funny part is the sales of DELL already called me twice to check when I will decide to buy.

The 4 cell battery will just limit the amount of time you can work with your laptop when travelling without an access to the mains. I have the 6 cell batter (the cost for it is really low, so I would consider buying that if I were in your shoes) allows me to run the Vostro for at least 2.5 hours or - when in energy saving mode (and this still allows to work with it) - up to 3 hours wihout a mains connection.

All other specs of standard Vostro are enough- privided you do not buy the Celeron modell (if still available). Is leasing possible in your country? If yes, I would consider leasing it for three years. In my case this makes roughly 28 Euros per month for a Vostro Dual Core 2 GHz, 3 GIG RAM, 250 GB HDD, bigger battery, Windows XP, Office 2007 Basic, and McAffee Internet Security with actualisations for 3 years. Otherwise I would have spend something over 800 Euros at once and would need to argue with tax office how long I have to use the Vostro (for tax purposes of course). Afterwards (when leasing period ends) I may either buy it for a small amount of money or give it back (what I most probably will do).

For translation, an integrated graphics card is actually preferable... it consumes less power (longer battery operation) and displaying word documents is not exatly taxing in terms of graphics... even the age-old GMA 950 has more than enough power for anything you may want to do.
Gaming would be the only reason to get a discrete graphics card. | | | Flora Yu China Local time: 04:54 Member (2008) Japanese to Chinese + ... TOPIC STARTER Never Celeron again... | Jul 17, 2008 |

I will never use Celeron again..my current ACER 3461 is with Celeron that's why I wanna change.
Well, there're 3 basic configurations provided on DELL sales online shop here.
Celeron, Duo core 1.8 and Duo core 2.0...
You can choose to upgrade the hardware once you decide the model to customize.
But seems tax here is much higher..+800RMB(USD117) for purchasing 3 year technical support..and +1200RMB for 6 cell battery..
My friend told me 7200RPM hard disc will cause more heat and use more power, is that true? | | | Jerzy Czopik Germany Local time: 21:54 Member (2003) Polish to German + ... Yes, hotter and noisier - but faster | Jul 17, 2008 |
I have the standard HDD in both Vostro and Vaio - for just working enough.
For extended usage of huge TMs probably not.
This is why I keep my desktop - it has four (!) HDDs with 10000 rpm (2x) and 7200 (2x) working in RAID-sets. Noisy, surely hot, but very effective.
You have always to find compromises. Laptop is one and desktop too.
I would go for the standard HDD

Jerzy , Thank you for your advise again!
I think I already figure out which I should keep and which to drop.

New laptops are sold with Vista. Don't accept it, request your dealer to include XP. MS should work a lot to enhance Vista, it was launched with so many problems, that can affect your translation speed. I bought a DELL inspiron 1721, with Vista. It was really an ugly experience. I prefered to downgrade it to Windows XP and I lost the guaranty, but I WORK MUCH BETTER.
Kind regards
