This morning, for the first time, I saw ads on proz for non translation-related products (maybe they've been around for a long time, but I hadn't noticed). Aren't we already sollicited enough on the Internet and in our "real world" daily life?
I guess the proz team is trying to generate additional revenues (which might help the site expand, I don't know). But, so far, it was thru CAT, project management sw ads and the like, which can be instructive sometimes.

Now, isn't this supposed to be a professional site? I, personnaly, don't think "iPod dock" or "plastic clogs" fit in here.
I am looking for information that has something to do with my work (even an ad for an online bookstore falls into this category, if you think dictionaries).

One of the main reasons for me to join proz.com was its focus on linguistic services, even for ads. That has made quite a difference to other competitor sites which use every single discussion group for broadcasting annoying "propaganda".
Should I like to receive ads and all sort of unsolicited communications I would open a site in geocites or similar, with all the professional detriment it means.

I agree with that, but the fact is I have a paid subscription. I had also seen the thread about the google experiment, so I was all the more surprised to see those ads on "my" page.
Maybe a glitch in the mechanism that sorts paying from non-paying members?

We are working on some different ad programs and networks that will generate revenue to support the site and initiatives to improve. As we explore options our first priority is the membership community and your input is much appreciated.
We will be adjusting the settings so that members do not see non translated ads for the time being.

Anyone who uses Firefox rather than the IE can download a wonderful little plug-in – Adblock. I recommend it highly.
If you’re browsing the Net, any page, and some dullard inflicts his tawdry little advertisement on you, you just right-click and blast the dullard into oblivion. Adblock accepts wildcard blocks and it’s extremely easy to use. So if you are ever bothered by an ad that bothers you, you can just put a part of the originating site’s address into Adblock and you wo...
