Was going to post a link to the Guardian article about this myself, but thought it might upset some members, as I've been brought to heel for less scatalogical comments.
I'm not sure I approve of the Duden definition claiming the term as internet-specific. Some people seem to think there was no life at all - scurrilous or otherwise - before the net reared its head.

That's just the problem: Duden is not defining the English word, but a German word that looks deceptively like an English word. In German, "der Shitstorm" seems to be used specifically in reference to Internet-related shitstorms.

In this case, it's not a big deal for me, because the German concept is entirely contained within the English concept, but it could be a problem for people translating English>German. On the other hand, there is a problem of register from German>English, particularly for US audiences.

"Scheißgewitter" would have been nice, however, it doesn't really work because it sounds more like "shitty storm" than "storm of shit."
