English term

acquire

English Science Science (general) scientific writing
Is "acquire" the right word here?

As the composite is loaded, its matrix acquires microdamages, which are modeled by randomly dispersed empty quasispherical micropores.

Discussion

Nik-On/Off (asker) Apr 29, 2009:
Sorry, damage of a material
Nik-On/Off (asker) Apr 29, 2009:
The point is that the overall damage of a metrial is represented in this model as dispersed microdamages (damaged microvolumes) that are accumulated with time under load
Ramesh Bhatt Apr 29, 2009:
The sentense needs recomposition As has been pointed out, "damage" is a strong word and goes well with "sustain" or "suffer"; but then the second clause of the sentence, viz., "which is modeled by randomly dispersed empty quasispherical micropores" will not be consistent with the first clause. "Damage" is rectified/mended/etc., it can't be "modeled". The best thing in my view will be to change "microdamage" to some more suitable term. "Acquire" may not need any change then.

sustain

I do not anything about this field, but from a purely linguistic point of view, damage is usually "sustained" or "suffered" as has been suggested.
Also "microdamages" in the plural grates to my ear, and I would prefer "sustains microdamage, which is modelled..."

Sorry, that should be "I do not know anything...."

It is true that "acquires" is used in a modelling context because a model acquires the characteristics of the thing/system that it is modelling.

neutral Jim Tucker (X) : You undergo a process, but not the result of that process. The source text, with its plural "damages", emph. that this is a result. If it were singular, your suggestion would work //That 2nd link was written by non-E speakers; others prol. just bad styl
