The important question it what to expect from...

Remember the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle! What does Обратим внимание на add to the sentence/sense? A few more words/pennies on a per word basis, boring reading...

Russian is still filled with verbosity, like they're still fulfilling a Stakhanovite 5-year-plan execution of the use of words to be decorated with the Lenin Banner of Labor. Cut to the chase, get rid of the govno! Amen, Brothers/Sisters!

So I stepped on your toes. Tough. Be a translator, not a word shuffler making a big deal out of nothing. Get to the point. Dokladys give you 4 pages (at least, used to) to say what you have to say and it was great writing, to the point, clear-cut, no verbosity. Other journals/authors love to hear themselves; don't be among them as translators.

should read ...question IS (not IT) what to expect...

Thanks, Judith, for pointing out the error.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I'll go with the phrasing "the important question is what [modal verb not chosen yet] be expected from". Would like to say thanks to everyone participated in this interesting and instructive discussion"

Let us consider the importance of the matter: what is to be expected from

neutral Jim Tucker (X) : You could fix the Russian colon problem by simply saying "the importance of the matter(/question) of what is to be expected...// Well you still need an alternative to the colon; could be "the importance of what is to be expected. ("Of" is not so conspic.)

I don't see that implication at all. ++ Yes, but I personally dislike the repeating "of" from the stylistic standpoint. ++ That sounds good to me.

Let us now look at the importance of the question of what to expect when...

"Let us now look at the importance of the question of what may be expected when we introduce suppositions respecting non-linearity..."

Options:

"consider" rather than "look at".

Maybe omit "the importance of" (if context permits).

Replace "to expect" with "may be expected".

"... from the introduction of" is OK, though "when we introduce" will probably sound neater, if there's consistently this kind of 1st person plural narration in the article.

Of course "предположения" could be any number of things: propositions, conjectures, etc. You'll have to decide for the context.
Peer comment(s):

agree SirReaL : How about "Let us consider the important question/matter of..."?

Thanks, Mikhail. I wondered if it didn't imply "consider the degree of its importance", rather than simply an assertion that it's important?
agree Jim Tucker (X) : "consider" is probably a better register. Agree w your comment to MK -- could easily be so.

Let us now focus our attention on the importance of the question regarding what to expect...

I fail to see why we can't retain a literal translation of внимание.

In this chapter, we focus our attention on Chaplygin systems.

Let us now consider the implications of introducing ...

If I'm not leaving too much out, perhaps this would work.

Without seeing more of the text, I can't really judge how important the word важность is.

If it's considering the relative importance of different questions (how much weight we should attach to this question or that question), then there is some sense in translating важность as 'importance'.

In the light of your comment:

Due weight/consideration/attention should be given to the question of ...

A question deserving attention is ...

Perhaps something on those lines would work. It's not that I want to avoid the word 'importance' at all costs, I just think it's worth considering some other options.
Note from asker:
I read "Обратим внимание на важность вопроса" as "Note that the following question is important:"
