“Judicial Training and Mutual Recognition”
Judicial training; building mutual trust among judicial authorities; promoting knowledge of other legal systems in the EU and the mutual recognition of judicial decisions are so intrinsically bound up in the process of delivering Europe-wide justice that it is impossible to separate them out when looking at the subject holistically. Knowledge of other legal systems, not only in the mechanistic sense of how they operate but also what drives them philosophically and jurisprudentially, are as important to the establishment of trust in their juridical integrity as to the confidence which every other state can give to court-based judgements delivered in individual states. Across Europe we are in a brave new world in which, at the ideological level, old differences are to be put aside for the greater good of the population of the Continent as a whole. Training, trust and knowledge are the three by-words which will lead to successful mutual recognition.
