English term

jurisdiction

English Bus/Financial Law: Contract(s) Terms and conditions
Hi guys,
I'm wondering whether "jurisdiction" means the territory over which authority is exercised or it means the right, power?
Anyway I don't really understand "jurisdiction" in that sentence. Could anyone help me to clarify it?
Thank you!

The simplest way to explain this Is "the place where you live".

right to interpret and apply the law within an area

HERE it means the competent courts or legal authorities in the judicial area of your domicile or residence...their sphere of activity/authority

Power or right of a legal or political agency to exercise its authority over a person, subject matter, or territory. Jurisdiction over a person relates to the authority to try him or her as a defendant. Jurisdiction over a subject matter relates to authority derived from the country's constitution or laws to consider a particular case. Thanks! Indeed for this context "the competent courts or legal authorities in the judicial area of your domicile or residence"
neutral Daryo : far more than that - it's firstly the power to create the laws or even in some cases simply decide what are the rules out of thin air - dictatorships or even medieval monarchies are still not a thing of the past ...

Governments, in democratic societies, create laws which are then interpreted...i.e. Here it's laws/interpretation in a domiciliary area
neutral philgoddard : I agree with your explanation, but not your answer.

authorities deciding about rules applied in the territory where you live / do business

it's firstly an authority that can decide which rules are to be applied and it's also a territory where these rules are applied (not necessarily all of or only the "national" territory)

in this ST "your jurisdiction" refers first to the territory - rules in force in the territory where you live / do business

agree philgoddard : Yes, it means your local laws.

Thanks!
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : "rules applied"?? Are we in a school? And who are these "authorities" and what are they "deciding" exactly? All very vague!

All very general and applicable anywhere in the world, even if there isn't a whiff of democracy around / if you get off your desk and go far enough you could find yourself under the very real jurisdiction of some local warlord or dictator

place in which you might wish to take legal action

In the context given, "If your jurisdiction does not allow limitations on warranties", the word "jurisdiction" clearly refers to the website user's region/territory — or, perhaps, 'judicial area'.
This is similar to the brief explanation offered by Nguyen Dieu.
However, it is notably broader than "the judicial area of domicile" offered by Gallagy, because it may be possible for the website user to take legal action in a place away from his/her domicile.

There is _not_ an expectation that the website user will personally have authority [authorisation] to make/administer laws (another possibility suggested by the dictionary definitions paraphrased by the OP).

It certainly does not refer to the legal institutions either.

Oops.
First example sentence should read:
"If limitations on warranties are not allowed in your jurisdiction, .... "
Cut-and-paste error.
Example sentence:

If limitations on warranties are not allow in your jurisdiction, ....

If your state/country does not allow limitations on warranties, ....
