Historical terms for windmills
I'm looking for the word to describe the central beam that runs down the middle of a 17th century Dutch windmill, which has the power from the sails transferred to it and goes on to power various machines in the mill. The context is as follows:
Die Windkraft wird auf einen gewaltigen Balken in der Mitte des Turms übertragen. Dieser Balken heißt Läufer und treibt mehrere Maschinen.
Would be grateful for any input / suggestions.
Many thanks.

upright shaft
The german source sounds odd to me. This "central beam" is called Königswelle here:

Depending on whether or not you have more similar terminology in your text, the following glossaries (which overlap hugely and possibly share the same author) may or may not be useful. Both contain exactly the same explanation of the term "upright shaft":
"Upright Shaft - The Upright Shaft is the main vertical shaft found in Smock and Tower mills. It is also found in some Post mills. It carries the Wallower at its top end, and a Great Spur Wheel at the bottom end. The Great Spur Wheel drives two or more Stone nuts."
