Discussion

Oliver Simões Sep 25:
Douglas, In this case, I would say that a gender-neutral term for "midwife" is yet to be created as male practitioners become more common and the level of disorientation/discomfort increases:

"I, in turn, have argued that the effect of a body out of place – either as a midwife or a service user who is not a woman – can be disorientating for all involved and that this manifests itself most problematically in the word ‘midwife’ itself." https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09589236.2021.1...

According to ChatGPT: "The gender-neutral term for a male midwife is simply midwife. In modern usage, 'midwife' refers to a person trained to assist in childbirth, regardless of their gender. Some may use the term midwife practitioner or obstetric practitioner for clarity, but 'midwife' itself is widely accepted as gender-neutral in the profession."
Douglas Bissell Sep 25:
Midwife @Oliver,
Actually, the BBC begs to disagree: https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-41426691

The rise of the male midwife
Dilan is no longer quite the outlier Paul Lewis was when he first qualified. According to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, out of 43,168 registered midwives in the UK at the end of March 2017, some 188 were men. But that is still a minuscule 0.4% of the total.
The ratio of male to female midwifery students is slightly higher - of 9,260 midwifery undergraduates and post-graduates in 2015/16, 105 were men. This proportion of 1.1% has remained more or less steady over the past decade, according to the Higher Education Statistics Agency.
Of the 450 midwives permanently employed at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, three are men, including the head of midwifery, Giuseppe Labriola.
Oliver Simões Sep 25:
Midwife In response to Douglas' question: A midwife is a midwife. No need for gender neutrality here because this role is only performed by women!

Some interesting stats for those refuting the importance of gender neutrality. Compare the number of women in the highest position of power between 1972 (year when the first issue of Ms. magazine was published) and 2024: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1058345/countries-with-w... (I'm not suggesting that this was due exclusively to gender-neutral language, but it was definitely a factor as societies become more accepting of inclusion.)
Fernando Effori Sep 25:
I was going to suggest "fratersorority," but it's taken ;-)
Nick Taylor Sep 25:
@ Douglas Talk about stirring up hornets nest regarding non gender specific terminology. The only obvious solution IMO (with my tongue firmly ensconced in my cheek) would be "SIBLINGERNITY" ;-)

neutral philgoddard : This is too gender specific.

Hi Phil. You'd better take this up with the Romans: A palavra confraria vem da junção dos termos em latim "com", que quer dizer “junto”, mais “frater”, que quer dizer “irmão”.[1]
agree Nick Taylor : Bloody brotherhood of gourmets! My brother in law is a member of one and spends a FORTUNE at their shindigs :-)

Thanks Diego
agree Mario Freitas : Yes, it's correct, and if you start worrying about gender equality you'll likely have to find another profession.

neutral Oliver Simões : Ombudswoman that is: https://n9.cl/b0dp0 There is a tendency (in EN-US at least) to use gender-neutral language. I concur with Phil and disagree with Mario. In contemporary English, it's important to keep gender neutrality in mind as we translate.

No, it doesn't hurt, nut let's not go overboard with PC terms. Should a midwife be called a midofficer or midperson?

[wine] society

Este site lista várias wine societies de vários tamanhos. Também fala de clubs, sem diferenciar muito rigidamente, mas a descrição das societies, os encontros informais para degustar e falar sobre, correspondem bem ao texto da Salton.

[wine] fraternity

Confrérie vineuse
French term for wine fraternity. The main objectives are mostly corresponding events for the cultivation of wine culture and customs of the wine-growing regions concerned within the framework of, among other things, professional wine tastings with awards and gastronomic festivities. https://glossary.wein.plus/confrerie-vineuse

As to the gender issue raised by one of our colleagues, apparently "fraternity" is not gender-specific:
"Fraternity: The name applied to Greek organizations including both men’s and women’s organizations." https://www.emoryhenry.edu/live/blurbs/1302-greek-life-termi...

Note from asker:
Thank you. I saw that translation but I did not like it. I did not see many sites using it. So I thought there might be a better one.
