«Жигулевские ворота»

Russian to English Marketing Marketing presentation about a city
These words are describing a city's mission.

Here's the context:
Быть индустриальным, деловым, культурным и коммуникационным центром, проводником информационных и транспортных потоков – «Жигулевскими воротами» России на евразийском пространстве.

Is it just "Zhiguli gates" or better to say something else? Perhaps I'm over-thinking this one.

Discussion

Allison Keating Apr 1, 2014:
I agree with The Misha here, Sarah. I would probably skip it altogether or go with a non-literal translation.
The Misha Mar 31, 2014:
Don't worry about it. It is my pleasure, give the points to whoever has the most agrees.
Sarah McDowell (asker) Mar 31, 2014:
Thanks The Misha, I followed your advice about not translating «Жигулевские ворота» because an average English reader will not know anything about it.
I would select your answer but you submitted it as a comment instead.
Larissa Boutrimova Mar 30, 2014:
The Misha, No, it's not the same as saying that "Manitoba is the West gateway"; rather it's the same as saying that "(something) is a Manitoba gateway to the West".
The Misha Mar 30, 2014:
James, Gateway to the West sounds perfectly fine, as would the gateway to Zhiguli region. Zhiguli gateway, on the other hand, doesn't. It's the same as saying that Manitoba is the West gateway. It's strictly a matter of collocation. One is used, and the other just isn't.
The Misha Mar 30, 2014:
Skip ip altogether. This is a cultural reference that tells nothing at all to your average English speaker and may well be confusing. What you want in the end is an effective marketing text rather than a faithful word-for-word rendering of the original.

gateway into the future

"zhiguli gateway" means nothing to anybody who grew up outside of USSR; in this context it seems that they are using it to describe the way to the future, something that opened the door. Therefore, I would use "gateway into the future".

May be even "access point" or "connection point" will work better as this is the city that connects markets

agree James McVay : It's the name of a geographic feature. But The Misha has a point about its cultural significance.

neutral The Misha : You have a usage problem here. I can imagine a gateway, and I can reasonably conceive of the Zhiguli Gate, but the Zhiguli GateWAY?
